Mission

The mission of the santa barbara foundation is to mobilize collective wisdom and philanthropic capital to build empathetic, inclusive and resilient communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The santa barbara foundation granted over $1.9 million to the scholarship foundation of santa barbara for scholarships and loans in 2010. Through this collaboration, millions of dollars is efficiently distributed to the students of santa barbara county for student aid. In 2010 we awarded over 900 in loans and scholarships.
Activity 3
Direct program activitiesthe women's fund of santa barbara is a special interest fund of the santa barbara foundation. The women's fund uses collective philanthropy to make annual gifts to non profit organizations whose programs address the needs of women, children and families in southern santa barbara countythe women's fund of northern santa barbara county responds to the community's most urgent needs by making substantial gifts in the north county. Members and supporters of the fund translate their values into action to serve as a catalyst for change on behalf of the women, children, and families in north county. The women's funds educate and inspire women to become leaders in philanthropy, emphasizing the power of collective giving and the rewarding personal experience that active philanthropy provides.svp of santa barbara social venture partners of santa barbara (svp sb), is a local chapter of an international organization which is sponsored by the santa barbara foundation. Svp partners seek to create significant, long-term social change in santa barbara by achieving a dual mission: expanding the capacity of innovative nonprofits by investing time, expertise, and money to collaboratively strengthen these organizations. Expanding philanthropy by educating individuals to be well informed, effective and engaged philanthropists. The focus area of social venture partners of santa barbara during 2010 was homelessness and transitional housing.the mission of the incredible children's art network is to bring high quality arts programs to children in santa barbara county, particularly those least likely to receive them. Through sustained creative learning opportunities that emphasize both artistic excellence and access, ican seeks to affect positive social change in the communities it serves.ican believes that all young people, not just those with resources, should have access to quality arts learning opportunities. To that end, in 2010, ican added a fifth elementary school site to its in-school visual arts program serving grades k-6. This program now serves approximately 2,200 students at adelante charter, adams, franklin, harding, and mckinley schools with in-school instruction. Participating sites are title i schools that have a statewide academic proficiency index ranking of 4 or lower (out of ten) and serve a majority of english language learners and students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. Key elements of the program include highly qualified, effective teachers; regularly scheduled class periods for art, functional and aesthetic space and materials, professional development opportunities that inspire teachers' creativity and personal growth and contribute to the vitality of the program as a whole, and the active support of parents, school officials, interested individuals, and community organizations. The end of 2010 also saw the launch of an afterschool music program inspired by venezuela's renowned el sistema model, which seeks to effect social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. This pilot afterschool program was launched at franklin elementary school and will provide free music instruction to approximately 30 1st and 2nd graders. In accordance with the teachings of el sistema, the ican program will focus on the togetherness of ensemble and the pride of performance.thrive formed as a funders collaborative in order to focus funding, knowledge and attention on serious deficits in our education system related to the low success rates of children from low-income and mostly latino families. The primary strategy is to support a place-based network of nested systems (e.g., community, neighborhood, school, family) that share an integrated and connected set of services from womb through college and career. USING OUR UNRESTRICTED FUNDS, WE ARE ABLE TO RESPOND TO PROPOSALS SUBMITTED BY NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR COUNTY. WE ALSO MAKE INVESTMENT IN LONG TERM INITIATIVES THAT IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OUR COMMUNITIES. MANY OF OUR GRANTS ARE DETERMINED BY THE CHARITABLE INTERESTS OF OUR DONORS. IN 2010 NEARLY 85% OF THE GRANT DOLLARS AWARDED BY THE SANTA BARBARA FOUNDATION EACH YEAR COME FROM DESIGNATED OR DONOR ADVISED FUNDS, MEANING DONORS DESIGNATE OR RECOMMEND THE ORGANIZATIONS TO WHICH THE FUNDS ARE DISTRIBUTED. IN 2010 WE AWARDED OVER 1670 GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS AND 128 SCHOLARSHIPS TO INDIVIDUALS.
