“Openhouse is a charitable organization, founded in 1998 to enable San Francisco Bay Area lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age. The Organization provides housing, direct services, and community programs that reduce isolation and empower LGBT seniors to improve their overall health, well-being, and economic security.Without children or other biological family to rely on, LGBT older adults need a model for aging in a community tailored to their lives and family structures. The Organizations goal is for every LGBT senior to: live in safe and stable housing that is affordable to them; be welcomed and appropriately served by all providers along the continuum of care; and be engaged with and supported by their communities of choice.Housing:For decades, thousands of LGBT people have flocked to San Francisco to find personal freedom and acceptance. As older adults, many LGBT seniors struggle to find housing they can afford where they also feel safe to live authentically in a community that respects their lives and understands their relationships.In 2011, Openhouse (through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Openhouse Laguna LLC (the LLC)) formed a partnership with Mercy Housing California, a highly experienced nonprofit developer of affordable housing. Through the 55 Laguna LP (the LP), the two agencies secured significant funding from the City and County of San Francisco to develop a new housing community welcoming to LGBT seniors at 55 Laguna Street in San Francisco.Phase 1 of the development began in April 2015 with the renovation of Richardson Hall. When completed in September 2016, the historic building will include 40 apartments, a ground floor retail space and and expanded Openhouse Information and Service Center. Phase 2, scheduled to begin in October 2016, includes 79 additional units of housing and a new Openhouse Program Center.Separately financed through a community fundraising campaign, the expanded Openhouse facilities along Laguna Street will accommodate the delivery of multiple support services and a wide range of resource events, educational programming, and community-engagement opportunities for both residents and LGBT seniors living across the city.Social Services:Healthy Aging Planning and SupportAn estimated 25,000 LGBT seniors live in San Francisco. Research is clear that LGBT seniors are less likely to participate in general community activities and access the housing and services they need because they fear judgment, rejection or compromised care. Thus, LGBT seniors either do not disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity orat risk to their health and well-being remain isolated without access to housing and community-based services. Openhouse increases access to housing, health and community services by providing the following support services. The agency served 1,860 individuals in FY15. Information and AssistanceLGBT older adults find new sources of support and access critically needed services through the information, referrals and basic emotional support provided by Openhouse. To meet growing community demand and the priorities identified by the San Francisco (LGBT) Aging Policy Task Force, Openhouse was designated as one of ten city-funded Aging and Disability Resource Centers in July 2014.Case Management and Care CoordinationIn September 2014 Openhouse began the citys first case management program for LGBT older adults who have multiple challenges and more complex needs. This continuum of assistance provides the wrap-around support, linkages and coordination that all seniors need.
