IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartIVGrp/ExplanationTxt1TUMORI QUALIFIES AS A "PUBLICLY SUPPORTED" ORGANIZATION UNDER IRC SECTION 170(B)(1)(A)(VI) BECAUSE IT SATISFIES THE "FACTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES" TEST SET FORTH IN TREAS. REG. SECTION 1.170A-9(F)(3) IN 2013. TUMORI NORMALLY RECEIVES AT LEAST 10% OF ITS SUPPORT FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AND IT CARRIES ON A CONTINUOUS AND BONA FIDE PROGRAM OF SOLICITATION OF PUBLIC SUPPORT. MOREOVER, TUMORI MEETS THE FOLLOWING FACTORS ENUMERATED IN THE REGULATIONS AS BEING INDICATIVE OF PUBLIC SUPPORT: 1.PERCENTAGE OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT (TREAS. REG. SECTION 1.170A-9(F)(3)(III)) DURING THE FIVE-YEAR PERIOD ENDING ON DECEMBER 31, 2013, THE PORTION OF TUMORI'S SUPPORT THAT QUALIFIES AS ELIGIBLE SUPPORT IS 15.24% WHICH IS IN EXCESS OF THE 10% THRESHOLD. 2. SOURCES OF SUPPORT (TREAS. REG. SECTION 1.170A-9(F)(3)(IV)) TUMORI RECEIVED CONTRIBUTION FROM A RANGE OF PRIVATE DONORS, INCLUDING INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE THEMSELVES SUFFERED FROM EYE CANCERS AND WISH TO SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION'S RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP. DURING THE PAST FIVE YEARS, THE FOUNDATION HAS RECEIVED GENEROUS SUPPORT FROM INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES, AS WELL AS GRANTS FROM A RANGE OF ORGANIZATIONS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO ENJOYS SUPPORT FROM THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY IN THE FORM OF COLLABORATIVE SPONSORSHIP OF CONFERENCES TO PRESENT EYE CANCER RESEARCH. PRESENTLY, THE FOUNDATION'S FUNDRAISING IS CONDUCTED PRIMARILY THROUGH PERSONAL CONTACTS BY DR. CHAR AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BOARD. IN THE FUTURE, THE FOUNDATION MAY ALSO SOLICIT GOVERNMENT GRANTS (E.G., FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH). 3. REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNING BODY (TREAS. REG. SECTION 1.170A-9(F)(3)(V)) TUMORI'S GOVERNING BODY REPRESENTS BROAD PUBLIC INTEREST, NOT THE PERSONAL OR PRIVATE INTERESTS OF A LIMITED NUMBER OF DONORS. THE SIX VOLUNTEER MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS INCLUDE DR. DEVRON CHAR, THE ORGANIZATION'S FOUNDER AND ONE OF THE WORLD'S LEADING OCULAR CANCER SPECIALISTS, AS WELL AS AN EYE CANCER SURVIVOR, A PROFESSOR OF LAW AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, HASTINGS, AND THE FORMER CEO OF A LARGE BAY AREA COMPANY. THESE COMMUNITY LEADERS AND PHILANTHROPISTS ARE COMMITTED TO CONDUCTING AN ONGOING FUNDRAISING PROGRAM TO SUSTAIN THE ORGANIZATION. 4. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS OF POLICIES IN THE RESEARCH FIELD, THE PRIMARY WAYS TO DISSEMINATE EDUCATIONAL CONTENT TO THE INTERESTED PUBLIC ARE SPEAKING AND PUBLISHING. DR. DEVRON CHAR,THE TUMORI'S FOUNDER AND CHAIR, SPEAKS FREQUENTLY AT CONFERENCES REGARDING OCULAR CANCER. FOR EXAMPLE IN 2013, HE SPOKE AT THE CONFERENCES HOSTED BY HARVARD UNIVERSITY AND THE CPMC OCULOPLASTICS SERIES. TUMORI ALSO CONTINUED TO WORK WITH J WILLIAM HARBOR IN ORDER TO EXPLORE ADJUNCTIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR PATIENTS WITH HIGH RISK OCULAR MELANOMA. TUMORI'S DATABASE IS AVAILABLE TO USE BY INTERESTED RESEARCHERS, AND SEVERAL PUBLICATIONS HAVE BEEN BASED ON THE CLINICAL DATA OBTAINED FROM TUMORI'S DATABASE. FOR EXAMPLE: S THAMPI, S HETTS, D COOKE, P STEWART, E ROBBINS, A BANERJEE, S DUBOIS, D CHAR, V HALBACH, K MATTHAY: SUPERSELECTIVE INTRA-ARTERIAL MELPHALAN THERAPY FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED AND REFRACTORY RETINOBLASTOMA: RESULTS FROM A SINGLE INSTITUTION.
