“During its 2019 home season, earplay produced three concerts in san francisco consisting entirely of chamber music composed in the 20th and the 21st centuries, with an emphasis on performances of world, us and west coast premieres. Two of the concerts took place at taube atrium theater(february 11 & april 8), and the closing concert took place at herbst theatre (may 20). Each concert was preceded by a facilitated talk with the composers whose works were performed that evening, and each concert was followed by an open (and free) reception in which audience members could mingle and speak with the musicians and composers. Earplay also conducted the 2019 earplay donald aird composers competition, now in its 19th year. The competition generated 112 entries from 95 composers, representing 27 u.s. States and 15 other countries. The winner of the 2019 prize was gilian cohen, whose work "late shadow" will be performed on earplay's feruary 10, 2020 concert. Additional key activities included the third year collaboration with west edge opera on thier snapshot series, which incubates new operas by pairing composers and librettists of an in-progress with a musical ensemble, singers, direction, and venues for performing staged readings. In 2019, snapshot presented a program consisting of four works-in-progress in san francisco and in berkeley. In february 2019, an earplay/real opera coproduction of a new opera "howard's end, america" by allen shearer was presented three times at zspace in san francisco. In addition, earplayers performed at uc davis and at intermusicsf and for a recording project with composer patricia alessandrini.”
