Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Save Our Shores Certified Public Accountant (CPA) prepares the organizations 990 based on required financial data submitted to her by the Finance Manager. Upon the CPAs completion of a draft 990, the Executive Director conducts the initial review and then provides a copy to the Board Treasurer who reviews it both individually and with the Finance Committee. The Treasurer may call a meeting of the Finance Committee with the express purpose of reviewing the 990 collectively, or may ask members of the Finance Committee to submit individual written comments. If, during this review process, questions or issues are raised regarding information in the 990, the Executive Director and Finance Manager reviews the backup data with the Treasurer or the full Finance Committee as appropriate. If it is determined that changes to the 990 are required, those changes are reviewed and discussed with the organizations CPA who will make revisions that the Executive Director, the Treasurer and the CAP agree should be made prior to finalization and submission of the 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Save Our Shores has a conflict of interest policy. Implementation of the policy is by Board review. If a potential conflict of interest is raised, the Executive Committee reviews the facts and circumstances of the situation and determines if a Director should recuse him/herself from specific governance issues and/or decision making processes. Conflicts of interest at the staff level are reviewed by the Executive Director, who may seek guidance from the Executive Committee and is responsible for making a final determination of appropriate action.

Save Our Shores stores all of its financial statements, policies and documents on a secure server. They are not published on our website, but information regarding how to request access to those documents is provided there. As a non-profit that respects and complies with best practices in transparency, we readily share any of these documents with the requesting party(ies).

IRS990/Desc0Save Our Shores engaged 9,658 individuals in its various outreach, education, and volunteer programs from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. Public Outreach & Advocacy: Save Our Shores hosted or participated in 45 public outreach events, reaching approximately 2,713 individuals. These events included SOS Speaker Series, Pollution Prevention Outreach, Whalefest Monterey, SOS Open House, and more. In addition, Save Our Shores in collaboration with a local coalition of supporters successfully executed the Ban the Butt campaign, resulting in the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors unanimously passing a historic ordinance banning the sale of single use cigarette filters within unincorporated areas of the county. Ocean/Marine Education: Save Our Shores engaged 1,631 students and 357 adults through our education programs. Many students were engaged multiple times through our education program series. SOS provided 33 educational presentations to 37 classes, 21 educational field trips with 41 classes, and 51 days of afterschool programs with 4 cohorts of students across 4 schools. 102 students enrolled and participated in the Junior Sanctuary Stewards afterschool program, 100% of these students were from an underserved school. Save Our Shores worked with youth in 25 schools from 13 school districts throughout the Central Coast region and 1 out of state school, 52% of schools that received education programming are from underserved communities and Title 1 schools.Beach, River, and Inland Cleanups: Save Our Shores engaged community volunteers in cleanup activities throughout Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, including Annual Coastal Cleanup Day in September. In total, the organization held 182 cleanups along beaches, rivers, and inland areas. 4,679 volunteers, including 2,008 youth, volunteered their time in cleanups. Altogether, these individuals logged over 10,000 volunteer-hours throughout the year at cleanup events and removed over 16,727 pounds of debris from the environment.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Save Our Shores Certified Public Accountant (CPA) prepares the organizations 990 based on required financial data submitted to her by the Finance Manager. Upon the CPAs completion of a draft 990, the Executive Director conducts the initial review and then provides a copy to the Board Treasurer who reviews it both individually and with the Finance Committee. The Treasurer may call a meeting of the Finance Committee with the express purpose of reviewing the 990 collectively, or may ask members of the Finance Committee to submit individual written comments. If, during this review process, questions or issues are raised regarding information in the 990, the Executive Director and Finance Manager reviews the backup data with the Treasurer or the full Finance Committee as appropriate. If it is determined that changes to the 990 are required, those changes are reviewed and discussed with the organizations CPA who will make revisions that the Executive Director, the Treasurer and the CAP agree should be made prior to finalization and submission of the 990.

If a potential conflict of interest is raised, the Executive Committee reviews the facts and circumstances of the situation and determines if a Director should recuse him/herself from specific governance issues and/or decision making processes. Conflicts of interest at the staff level are reviewed by the Executive Director, who may seek guidance from the Executive Committee and is responsible for making a final determination of appropriate action.
