Mission and Program Overview

Mission

At halleck creek ranch we focus on what people can do. We work with our participants to identify and achieve personal goals, allowing them to reach beyond their disability, and celebrate their capabilities. (see schedule o)

Founded in 1977 halleck creek ranch invites youth and adults with disabilities to live a "life without barriers" through the beneficial activity of therapeutic horseback riding (thr) and equine assisted activities and therapies (eaat). Horseback riding promotes a unique sense of freedom and mobility, allowing riders to imagine the future, and to enjoy the present, in a way they never thought possible. For volunteers, their interactions with the riders teaches them that people with disabilities can do anything they want to, they just have to do it a little differently. The relationships between riders, volunteers, and horses establish connections that benefit our entire community. Halleck creek ranch partners with the marin county 4h youth development program to recruit and train youth volunteers to assist us in our riding program.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

We rely on a large and active volunteer corps to help us deliver our programs and we are grateful for their help quarterly volunteer orientations were held along with four day-long training sessions for approximately 200 youth and adult volunteers. Several local community groups and businesses participated in work days at the ranch. Donated volunteer hours equaled 14,750 in 2014.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Program participants come from 7 seven bay area counties including alameda, contra costa, marin, napa, san francisco, solano, and sonoma. Approximately 80% of our riders are youth under the age of 21. Riders present a broad spectrum of developmental and physical challenges including; autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, brain injury, developmental delay, mood disorder, down syndrome, sensory integration disorder and pervasive diagnosis disorder, not otherwise specified. They represent diverse cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds with 10% of riders coming from households with annual income below 30,000. The horse's gait at the walk mimics the human gait and provides vestibular stimulation promoting improved balance and ability to maintain an upright position. Riding improves muscle and tendon flexibility, gross and fine motor skills, coordination and core strength. Participants with impulse control deficits often improve self-regulation and reduction of self- harming behaviors. Riders learn to communicate with the horse through voice, posture, hand and leg aids. They learn to observe horse behavior and understand its meaning. Unique to our program is the wilderness two- mile trail rides we offer onto an adjacent 258 acre protected open space. The ride is an adventure, crossing halleck creek several times, ascending hills and descending into a stunning redwood grove. The area is populated with eagles, hawks, fox, bobcats, marmots and a variety of wildflowers, trees and vegetation providing a rich sensory experience.

IRS990/MissionDesc0FOUNDED IN 1977 HALLECK CREEK RANCH INVITES YOUTH AND ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES TO LIVE A "LIFE WITHOUT BARRIERS" THROUGH THE BENEFICIAL ACTIVITY OF THERAPEUTIC HORSEBACK RIDING (THR) AND EQUINE ASSISTED ACTIVITIES AND THERAPIES (EAAT).
