Its mission is to promote evidence-based education policies and practices. The Wing Institute was designed to be a catalyst for existing resources supporting real-time evidence-based education. PROFESSIONAL FORUMS Annual Summit on Evidence-Based Special Education: The Wing Institute conceptualized, developed, hosted and facilitated its seventh Annual Summit on Evidence-based Special Education. The theme of the 2012 Summit was: Building and Sustaining an Effective School Culture: Supporting Educator and Student Success. This Summit examined the critical role of school culture in improving school performance, strategies from successful school turnarounds, and lessons learned from the private sector. It was designed to facilitate communication, collaboration, and cooperation among education stakeholders from various disciplines, service and research areas as well as consumers who have experience with, and interest in, evidence-based special education. The summit included representatives from sixty different organizations, twenty different professions, from thirteen states. The program included pre-summit activities (a reading course and on-line survey), resource packets of relevant information, presentations by respected experts from across the nation, interactive work groups, and follow-up activities.Annual Evidence-based Education Professional Forum: The Wing Institute conceptualized, developed, hosted and facilitated its Seventh Annual Evidence-based Professional Forum. The forum was designed to bring together a small group of leaders in the field to provide input and feedback on the strategies and activities of the Wing Institute, as well as develop a plan for the ongoing promotion of evidence-based education policies and practices in society. The 2012 Forum agenda included: 2012 Summit Debrief, 2013 Summit planning, Alternative Models for Future Summits, Update on Current School Reform Activities, Strengths and Weaknesses of the Current Education System, and Solutions for Improving Education Performance.Professional Advisory Group: The Wing Institute maintained a Professional Advisory Group of leaders in the field to provide ongoing input and support to its activities. The forum met on a regular basis to review issues and opportunities for promoting an evidence-based education culture, as well as coordinate group activities and assignments.Professional Conferences: The Wing Institute gave eleven scholarly presentations at professional conferences across the country sharing its research, reviews, and analyses. RESEARCH/ PUBLICATIONS Web-based Evidence-based Education Data-mining: The Wing Institute continues to implement an ongoing process for seeking out and disseminating research, publications, resources, etc. as they related to evidence-based education. This research is analyzed, organized, and disseminated across the Wing Institutes various information channels. The Wing Institutes web site provides a mind-map for interested parties to find a subject of interest, access research and policy papers on that topic, and read an analysis / review by Wing Institute staff on the relevance, strength, and details of the research. The Wing Institute reviewed over one thousand studies, identified the most important, and posted them in the data-mining section of its web site.Graduate Research Funding Program: The Wing Institute provides funding to graduate students interested in doing research in evidence-based education. This program promotes new research in evidence-based education as well as encourages graduate students to select this as an ongoing field of study.
