Activity 2

School and Student Housing: the Association operates the San Francisco Ballet School and a student residence. The Ballet School curriculum is designed and taught by an eminent faculty. It emphasizes a strong classical technique and a flow of movement that suggests a sense of energy, freedom, and joy - reflecting the kind of dancing favored by the Ballet. Girls and boys aged 6 to 18 follow a structured sequence of training stages designed to increase their technical skills, stamina, and discipline in accordance with their age and physical development. The program includes classes in technique, pointe work, pas de deux, men's technique, contemporary and character dance and music. Seminars on nutrition and related issues are offered throughout the school year. The Ballet School provides a limited number of tuition and housing scholarships to intermediate and advanced level students based on their financial need or potential to achieve a professional career in ballet. Approximately fifty percent of the dancers in the Ballet received all or part of their training at the Ballet School. Students have also gone on to dance with such companies as American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, English National Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Miami City Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Stuttgart Ballet. The Ballet School also operates summer sessions in San Francisco for professional ballet career-bound students from the U.S and abroad. During the fiscal year, the School changed the model of the summer program by splitting its upper and lower division curricula into two separate programs. During the fiscal year, the Ballet School had 727 students in the summer and regular school year.

Activity 3

Outreach: The Center for Dance Education ("CDE"), a department of the Ballet, was formed in 2001 to coordinate the Ballet's community outreach and education programs. The CDE operates programs in schools and the community at large, often in coordination with other community-based organizations. Within the CDE, Dance in Schools and Communites (DISC) was created and currently provides a free interactive movement to over 3,200 students in 34 San Francisco Unified School District Elementary Schools. Additional programs include after-school programs, a summer dance camp, ten-week residency classes taught in the public schools, scholarship programs, adult education, and community matinees.
