Activity 2

Forest restoration and park support. We restore land that has been logged or otherwise damaged. Working with california state parks, we restored trail access to pfeiffer falls in pfeiffer big sur state park after a fire damaged three bridges, cutting off hikers from the waterfall. In mill creek forest, we continued to decommission logging roads and restore waterways to hasten the process by which this area will resemble an ancient forest with a thick canopy, clear, fish-filled streams and abundant wildlife. We also provided financial and technical support to the national park service, california state parks and others who manage land originally protected by the league, and provided broad support so that california state parks could keep redwood parks open during a budget crisis that would otherwise have closed them.

Activity 3

Research and education programs. Our research program studies redwood forests to understand how to best protect them. We awarded over $100k for 7 redwood ecology research grants. We studied how climate change impacts redwood forests through our multiyear redwoods and climate change initiative. Collaborating with scientists from uc berkeley and humboldt state university, we tracked tree growth and survival in old growth coast redwood and giant sequoia forests, monitored weather changes, and studied redwood seedling drought resistance. The findings will help focus league efforts on where to protect and restore redwood forestland. Our education program inspires and connects youths to the redwood forests. This year, we awarded $100k to 30 schools and nonprofit organizations to support field trips and learning for youths.
