Activity 2

Independent living services: we provide intensive support services for people who live in their own housing, but are less able to manage their lives. These individuals receive monthly disability payments from the social security adminstration, but are required to have a payee to manage their funds. Support services provided include budgeting and money management, medical advocacy and medication oversight, referrals for transportation to medical appointments, assistance with personal hygiene, grocery shopping, laundry and housekeeping services (allowing them to pass room inspections required to stay in their own housing).

Activity 3

Visiting and education programs: the visiting program is for those who are relatively independent but due to mental illness or physical pain have a tendency to isolate. Once they isolate from others, their mental illnesses or addictions can tip them over the edge. Every week teams of two volunteers visit over 250 people. They visit the same people every week to provide continuity, build community and establish relationships. Last year we provided almost 20,000 volunteer hours in our visiting program. We also host a number of community building activities such as support groups, and other community. The center's edcucation program teaches 250 university students each year about issues of poverty, social justice, mental illness, and community building. We want these future leaders to have hands-on experience learning about the people we serve. We are building bridges to the greater community of the future.
