Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Land Stewardship & Education Program - This program utilizes a living campus as a place of learning about nature, stewardship skills, and conservation of wildlands. We host students from local schools and volunteers to participate in hands-on activities to cultivate a relationship with the natural environment and to build awareness and passion for stewarding this relationship. We worked with 30 high school students last year and 9 Americorps volunteers for 7 weeks over the summer. Various types of training included operating a mill and milling wood, trail maintenance, biochar production, timber stand surveys, operating a chipper and chipping wood, pruning and orchard care, operating a log splitter and firewood production, garden maintenance, fuels reduction in woods, and tree felling, earthen building techniques. Specific achievements include: Working together, the team poured in 432 hours to clear land of 1825 pounds of unwanted underbrush over 10 acres, spent 264 hours constructing and restoring 5.25 miles of hiking trails to gain access to trees without clearcutting them, and dedicated 16 hours to remove 19 species of animals safely from trail-building zones. Moved 1115 pounds of debris and trash over 111.5 hours, removing items from gardens, forested areas, and sheds that had been abandoned. The team helped repair 4 different houses and 3 different fencing and bench structures that had been created with natural clay plaster that was collected in the areas around the educational campus. Over 352 hours, the houses, benches, and fences went from cracked and chipped to smooth and refreshed. The team was also able to digitize 132 documents over 56 hours, saving history from the founding of Approvecho. Th team maintained 9 structures, cleared 9 acres of land to be used for educational purposes, and made 5.25 miles of trails that can be used to teach and practice regenerative forestry. The team worked with the Coast Fork Watershed Council on a land restoration project, helping move over 300 yards of fencing that will be used by the Cerro Gordo Land Conservancy and Approvecho. The team built a raised bed, inventoried 100 pounds of food, and organized 200 pounds of clothes for the Community Sharing Food Bank, all tasks that needed more manpower than the organization usually has. Finally, the team worked alongside the Kennedy Conservation Corps, a high school conservation group, and got to build out their community of young environmentalists.$0$73,318
Incubator Program - Residents stay on our facilities for up to two years as they develop mission-aligned projects. We also rent the facilities to other organizations. Over the course of the year, the Incubator Program served around 100 participants, some of whom were involved full-time for up to 7 weeks, while others attended stakeholder gatherings as a one-time event. The program helped entrepreneurs achieve significant business accomplishments, such as entering the Holiday Market and developing new products. Additionally, the program held five special events, including a biochar workshop for 20 people and an Indigenous forestry stakeholder gathering for another 20. A community-building event attracted 50 attendees, while AmeriCorps members and high school students participated in 35 and 15 days of programming, respectively. The individual events ranged from 9 to 50 participants.$0$16,256
