Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 7A

The governor of alaska appoints certain board members to the organization.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The return is reviewed by the executive staff and the board of directors' executive committee.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

The process is outlined in the officer handbook as well as in grant application materials and bylaws. Additionally, there is a general policy of declaring potential conflicts of interest; (1)to staff for their review and recommendations, and (2)having board meetings, where potential conflicts of interests are raised, discussed and sometimes voted on in order to resolve. Where a conflict exists, the board member abstains from voting and/or discussing the item of concern. This has been especially operative in the regrants committee, where board members regularly voluntarily abstain.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The executive director undergoes an annual board-wide review that includes both standard financial and narrative assessments. The executive committee of the board reviews, meets with executive and subordinate staff for input, and makes a recommendation that is discussed in executive session and approved by the whole board.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 19

As per guidelines and bylaws, all nonexecutive portions of board meetings are open to the public. All governing documents and minutes are available upon request.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Education program includes the following sub programs: urban rural exchange: this program aims to strengthen relationships between urban and rural alaskans by:(1)building mutual respect and understanding, 2)fostering a statewide sense of community through cross-cultural immersion. We do this through two approaches: the sister school exchange and the educator cross-cultural immersion. Take wing alaska: this program assists students from the lower kuskokwim school district with the transition to urban, post-secondary education. Beginning at the end of the sophomore year and continuing through high school graduation, each student participates in three intergration experiences on university campuses. Creating cross-cultural awareness and insight to the native peoples, their culture and their ways of teaching, learning and living. Creating cultural competence: this program assists newly hired teachers to build relationships that help them connect with the people, communities, and region where they will be teaching. The alaska humanities forum partners with communities, alaska native organizations, and school districts across the three rural regions to provide a creating cultural competence program for newly hired teachers. In this program, newly hired teachers participate alongside elders, culture bearer, local youth, and peers in a cultural immersion during the summer under the structure of a university-level multicultural studies course.
