To educate the public about the natural and cultural history of Washingtons Pacific Coast and inspire the joy and wonder of nature. The Coastal Interpretive Center considers Washington Pacific Coast to include the area from the Columbia River northward to Cape Flattery and eastward from the continental shelf to watersheds draining into the Pacific Ocean.
PUBLIC EDUCATION

|---|---|---|
| Education & Outreach: Starting with Arbor Day in April, we partnered with Ocean Shores Elementary School to teach students about the importance of trees and assist each class to plant a western hemlock seedling on school grounds. We partnered with the City Parks Department and the Parks Foundation on an Arbor Day event at North Bay Park that offered educational opportunities for kids of all ages to celebrate trees. We had the Mayor and City Council members help with planting 20 hemlock seedlings in the Park.As the season moved into the summer, we hosted ten school and group tours on site and at Damon Point for a total of 516 people ranging in age groups from elementary school to college! Our Education Committee launched the Ecology Youth Program, a series of day-camps with education modules focusing on marine ecology, local flora and fauna, coastal forests, and fresh water ecology. We provided special activities for children at the Center on each Saturday in July including making driftwood sailboats, sand dollar magnets, kites for the beach, and messages in a bottle. All for free.Along with our free programs, we hosted our fourth annual winter Glimpses Lecture Series including topics like shorebirds and their migration patterns and practices; the revival of traditional prairie management practices on the Quinault Reservation; peregrine falcons and what they eat; and information about Eight Amazing Places on the Washington Coast. Look for our current lecture series happening now (3rd Thursday of each month, October through March, at Homeport Restaurant's banquet hall, 6:30pm, $10/lecture).Plans for 2018: The CIC Education Committee is working on what we are calling a STEM Enrichment Program. We have drafted a partnership proposal between the CIC and the North Beach School District to use the Ecology Youth Program modules to help satisfy science requirements for our elementary and high school students. In essence, we would provide a living lab to augment the instruction the students are getting in the classroom. We have sent a letter to the District Superintendent to discuss the proposal and hope to be meeting with her within the next week or two. And, of course, we will continue to offer group tours, other educational events, and our Glimpses Lecture Series. The Center maintains an informative and active new website, maintains an informative Facebook page, and publishes an extensive nature filled monthly newsletter reaching over 400 email addresses. We are pleased to report that the Coastal Interpretive Center (CIC) has enjoyed another successful season in 2017. We continue to receive excellent reviews from our visitors about the education, information, and enjoyment of their experiences. We are honored to be considered one of the top tourist activities in Ocean Shores. | $28,808 | - |
| Exhibits: We continue to strive for updated, refreshed, and new interpretive exhibits commensurate with our mission to Educate the public concerning natural and man-made environments through presentation of the history and ecology of Washington State's coastal life.Exhibits: In 2017 we completed a computer centered interactive avian exhibit focused on recognizing our Washington state birds. A new, preserved albatross was added to our habitat display, including updating the albatross exhibit with an ocean scene mural painted by Katie Bingaman, a local artist. Our Ocean Shores history exhibit was updated with a rustic front entrance and expanded exhibits of the history of Ocean Shores. We are now in process of adding a monitor in this exhibit area providing a slide-show of many venues offered within our town. We are also working on the Beachcombing room, adding new material and having Katie add more of her mural magic to the scene. The continued core of activities are the thousands of visitors every year who come to see the exhibits and grounds, and experience all that the Center has to offer. Anywhere from 50 to 200 people visit daily, depending on season and weather conditions. Over the last ten years, an average of 21,700 visitors passed through the doors annuallyalmost 50% of these are children. This year we have had visitors from Canada, Netherlands, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, Belarus, Costa Rica, Ireland, Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, and China. About 50% of our visitors come from the I-5 corridor (Olympia to Everett) and about 10% from Grays Harbor County. | $1,354 | - |
| Environmental Stewardship: CIC continued a third year of a summer plant watering and fertilizing program for all the Weatherwax enhancement plantings. On-going weekly trail inspections along with trash pickup continue. We have assisted the city Ecology contractor, Landau Associates and the Dept. of Ecology(DOE) with trail/property tours and information.Repair maintenance of the trail signs and barricades were completed and new trail signage added this spring and summer. This stewardship program is ongoing and will certainly continue through 2018. | $593 | - |
