“Youth programs in 2018-2019, grub continued a 20+ year legacy in adaptive, innovative youth empowerment programming centered around our 2-acre farm. Grub's youth programing is multifaceted and includes a program during the academic year, a program during the summer, a program for youth who have left high school before graduating to obtain their ged, a young child program bringing school field trips and families with pre-k children on the farm. Grub also supports other organizations in adopting the grub youth program model. Through a partnership with capital high school and the olympia school district, grub served 22 students experiencing barriers to success, such as low-incomes and special needs. With a three-period block class as part of an experiential curriculum based on sustainable agriculture practices on the land, students earned science, social studies, and elective credits and got their hands in the dirt. They learned about the complexities of an inequitable food system, nurtured their personal resilience and leadership skills, and shared a bountiful harvest from the grub farm with the larger community. In addition, through a partnership with new market skills center, grub served 33 students from six different high schools over the summer. In our six-week, 180-hour employment training program, youth completed day-to-day tasks on the grub farm, showed tremendous personal growth, and improved their leadership skills. Ten of these youth returned to grub for our summer program after completing the academic year program, and four served in the summer program as peer crew leaders. In the spring of 2019, we piloted our first season of the grounded program. Through a partnership with gravity learning centers, the powerful grub youth empowerment curriculum was brought to young adults who have left high school to work on their ged. The first grounded cohort included 16 youth, ages 16-21, who left school before graduating. Grounded youth worked together towards their ged while gaining job, leadership, and personal development training through grub's farm-based programming. If youth were close to meeting the requirements of graduation, they worked to gain high school credit to work towards their diploma. Grounded programming includes receiving one-on-one ged support, learning how to operate the grub farm, engaging in team building and public speaking workshops, leading field trips, and building backyard gardens for families with low incomes. Through our partnership with rescare, most youth earn minimum wage for their work in the program. Others earn a 1,000 stipend from grub. The program is staffed by two youth program managers and an on-site ged teacher from gravity. We had a bountiful year on the grub farm the grub youth, along with interns and volunteers who logged more than 3,000 hours, grew 13,223 pounds of food. Of this, 7,400 pounds was donated to grub youth, their families, seniors and families with low incomes, community events, volunteers, interns, and staff. The rest was sold to help support grub programs through the youth-run market stand and csa shares. Beyond growing food, grub youth welcomed and hosted many farm visitors. This year, 550 kids visited the farm through 18 field trips to work, learn, play, and grow on the land. In addition, grub hosted a dynamic "families on the farm" program. Through this rich 14-week program, 13 low-income families with pre-k children grew roots on the grub farm. They shared stories, played games, painted with food, planted seeds, harvested, prepared and ate nutritious food together, and at the end of each day, they took home a share of farm produce to nourish their families. Furthermore, grub has developed deep ties with communities in our region and around the country. We partner with school districts, nonprofits, and other organizations to share grub's youth leadership model and to help programs get established and strengthen their communities. These programs work toward a common g”
“Tend, gather and grow tend, gather & grow (tend) helps youth connect with plants, place, and culture and creates opportunities to get outside, wake up the senses, and notice the world. This year, the program introduced youth to wild, edible, and medicinal plants through hands-on classes. We led our first "train- the-teacher" workshops and brought lessons to 12 tribal communities, six thurston county schools, and dozens of community programs. Elise krohn, grub's traditional plants program director, led a nine-month herbal apprenticeship for people exploring body systems, herbal therapeutics, medicine making, healing trauma, and strategies for community resilience. Sixteen representatives from seven tribal communities gathered monthly for tend's teacher internship program to support one another and nurture their connections to the land. They are now teaching the tend curriculum in their own communities. The tend curriculum is blossoming eight of our plant-specific resources are downloadable and available on our website. We've finished lessons for 20 northwest plants; the entire herbal apothecary module; significant portions of our tree communities module; wild food traditions lessons plus native berry identification cards, greeting cards, and a drawing book; and portions of a field trip guide to native-stewarded local ecosystems. The muckleshoot tribe, feeding 7 generations, and the university of washington center for conservation biology are partnering with us to finish creating these resources. Pilot lessons are going strong our team has co-written and piloted over fifty k-12 steam (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) lessons on local plants. Sixty-eight teachers attended trainings. Team educators piloted lessons at 12 schools and organizations. Lessons were taught in 12 tribal communities. We reached more than 700 students through pilot lessons and activities. In the voices of the participants: "the tend internship has been especially important in allowing me the hands-on experience of teaching traditional ecological knowledge and plant lessons, concepts and activities in a group setting, where i have much more opportunity for true and useful practice."-cinnamon enos, muckleshoot educator, 2018 tend internship participant "my favorite was the bath salt making. I loved crumbling the cedar, adding the salt and the rose petals, and everything. I like the smell and feel." -clare hopkins, winter gift making participant, 9 years old”
“Community food solutions this year we celebrated our 26th season of building gardens since 1993, we have built more than 2,800 gardens. Victory gardens are growing victory gardens benefit limited-income individuals and families whose income is at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. Victory gardens are free for thurston county families and empower them to grow fresh, healthy food for themselves. Between march and may, we built gardens at 59 households, serving 189 individuals, including 77 children and 12 seniors. This year, 158 volunteers contributed over 492 hours building gardens and supporting events with the victory garden project. They built 73 gardens in thurston county, 59 of which were free of charge (victory gardens) for low-income individuals and families. Military veterans built 22 gardens; 33 young people from the grub school and tumwater fresh programs helped build gardens; and 284 community members attended 21 free victory garden events. The victory farm returned this victory farm was born out of a partnership with the thurston county food bank on the site of their new lacey distribution center at 7027 martin way east. The farm is veteran-led and veteran-designed and offers hands-on opportunities for veterans to develop their skills in sustainable small-scale urban agriculture and food production. The site began as a vacant lot behind some abandoned buildings, strewn with garbage and covered in blackberries. To create the farm, grub facilitated three design sessions with 12 veterans plus professional landscaping community volunteers who are creating an intentional, flourishing space to grow good food, provide educational opportunities, and allow for healing. Volunteers created a planting plan for the 15-foot-wide edible food forest buffer to include 50% native edible evergreens as well as pollinator-friendly plants. They also designated green spaces for spring planting, built garden beds, constructed a tool shed and community meeting space, and finished the fence. Thirty-five veterans helped design or worked on the victory farm. Over 70 volunteers cleared the site of debris, built the fence, and constructed the tool shed, community meeting space, and garden bed frames. In the voices of the participants: "it has been the highlight of my summer. I'd say about half of the food in our meals is from the garden. We are getting better things to eat with the money we save."-2018 garden recipient "building gardens reconnected something in my spirit that had been lost since i got out of the military, and it reaffirmed that 'to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.' it's amazing how we find ourselves when we get lost in service to others, and grub provided a way to feel of service again. I'm thankful to grub for the opportunity to build gardens. I'm thankful to grub for showing that kindness is not weakness. I'm thankful to grub for being an example of how to intentionally live better: by the food we eat, by the relationships we build, by the service we provide; simply how to be the best person we can be."-2018 victory farmer”

I LIKE THE SMELL AND FEEL." -CLARE HOPKINS, WINTER GIFT MAKING PARTICIPANT, 9 YEARS OLD |

I'M THANKFUL TO GRUB FOR BEING AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO INTENTIONALLY LIVE BETTER: BY THE FOOD WE EAT, BY THE RELATIONSHIPS WE BUILD, BY THE SERVICE WE PROVIDE; SIMPLY HOW TO BE THE BEST PERSON WE CAN BE."-2018 VICTORY FARMER |
