FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Garden-raised bounty (grub) inspires positive and community change by bringing people together around food and agriculture. We partner with youth and people with low incomes to create empowering individual and community food solutions. We offer tools and trainings to help build a just and sustainable food system.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

2015-16 saw us engage more than 30 young people in farm-based summer and school year programming. Twnety-four new students and seven returning peer crew leaders received stipends to participate in 2015 summer programming, which involved growing, harvesting, and marketing food and flowers, as well as leading volunteers, participating in field trips, and learning to cook shared meals using produce grown on the farm. Four returning youth leaders represented grub at the national rooted in community (ric) youth summit in detroit, michigan. "grubbers" also connected with grub-like projects in aberdeen, centralia, and shelton. During the school year, youth spoke on behalf of grub to college students and local city councils. They led workshops for adults participating in the grub institute, and shared their knowledge of food and agriculture with hundreds of pre-k through middle school-aged children on farm-based field trips. Grub school students also helped build several kgp gardens, gaining experience as leaders and providers of valuable community resources.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Systems to create transformations in both. We envision gardens and our gardening programs as opportunities to support veteran volunteers, low- income gardeners, disengaged youth, and other marginalized people in growing networks of mutual aid and community engagement in the food system. We connect people with the sustainable food movement by sharing information and resources needed to grow fresh, healthy, and culturally-appropriate foods, along with mentorship and opportunities for leadership in the program. Our gardens provide physical and emotional health benefits; gardeners and volunteers are invited into supportive community, while gaining access to nutritious food, tools for increased self-sufficiency, and outdoor activity. Given that six of the top ten causes of death in the u.s. Are linked to behavior and nutrition, and a seventh--self harm--is linked with social isolation (social connection is shown to reduce suicidal ideation), our work to strengthen local food systems does not just have economic and environmental benefits. It also strengthens the overall emotional and physical resilience of our community. Kgp volunteers and staff build raised bed, double dug, and container gardens alongside new gardeners. We provide new gardeners with seeds, plant starts and cover crops, free access to our extensive gardening workshop series, and a connection to the greater gardening community. In 2015, grub offered 24 community workshops on growing, cooking, and storing food. Workshops were free of charge to first- and second- year grub gardeners, and open to the general public for a 5 suggested donation. In the 2015-16 fiscal year, we built 67 backyard gardens in thurston county serving 183 people, nearly half of whom were children and youth. Twelve of these were earthbox container gardens, and 55 were raised bed gardens. We also rebuilt an institutional garden serving seniors in assisted living at providence saint francis house, and built seven sliding scale fig gardens. Over 170 community volunteers, 33 of them veterans, contributed more than 2,600 volunteer hours to community food solutions programming, including kgp garden builds and victory farmers. This year, in addition to building kitchen gardens, we integrated our veteran engagement programming (the victory farmers) into our farm-based work and garden builds. We also cultivated new partnerships with seamar community health center, olympia pediatrics and others to lay the groundwork for a future prescription garden project. Each spring, we celebrate the end of our garden-building season with a community-building event we call "day of the bed." day of the bed build teams (sponsored by various service clubs, local businesses and community organizations) fundraise prior to the event and raise awareness about our work. On the day of the bed, each team builds a garden for a kgp gardener and attends an end-of-season shared meal and celebration. This year many local businesses donated food and supplies. More than 25 volunteers of all ages came together to build gardens serving ten new families. Once gardens were built, volunteers, staff, new gardeners, and other community members reconvened at the grub farmhouse to eat and celebrate our 23rd successful build season.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Aimed to deliver useful content (tools, models, resources, and materials) and, at the same time, share facilitation styles and techniques which support relationships-based group process. Pollination programming is about going beyond individual interventions to transform institutions. While engaging and empowering young people is a significant need in our communities, training adult teachers, mentors and role-models creates a powerful ripple effect. This year, we led farm and curriculum planning for a new tumwater site, readying it for summer programs, and provided in-depth technical assistance for its launch in summer of 2016. In 2015 the freedom farmers, our pollinated site serving olympia high school, grew 11,000 pounds of produce, providing almost 20% of all vegetables needed by the district's nutrition program. Our 2014 sister projects thrived in 2015 they grew food for themselves, local food banks, hospitals, and low-income housing developments. The crew in grays harabor county maintained a large raised- bed garden; mason county students expanded from a garden into a farm; in pacific county, students farmed on the sea school cooperative's homestead. In early 2016, we finished designing four new career technical education (cte) frameworks, in partnership with freedom farmers and with guidance from the office of the superintendent of public instruction (ospi). The new frameworks include: practice of sustainable agriculture (summer curriculum). Agriculture, hunger and the environment (coss-credited into social studies), practice of sustainable agriculture 2 (a school-year elective), and science of sustainable agriculture. All four have been approved by ospi and helped inspire ospi's creation of a new career pathway for the state of washington called "agroecology and sustainable agriculture."

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY FOOD SOLUTIONS: COMMUNITY FOOD SOLUTIONS (CFS) PARTNERS WITH PEOPLE WITH LOW INCOMES AND ORGANIZATIONS SERVING THEM TO CREATE GOOD FOOD SOLUTIONS FOR HOUSEHOLDS AND NEIGHBORHOODS. CFS INCLUDES VICTORY FARMERS, A "SWORDS TO PLOWSHARES" PROGRAM FOR VETERAN FARMERS; FOOD INVESTMENT GARDENS (OR FIGS), SLIDING SCALE GARDENS FOR FOOD-INSECURE PEOPLE WHO LIVE ABOVE 185% OF THE FEDERAL POVERTY LINE; AND THE KITCHEN GARDEN PROJECT (KGP), A PROGRAM WHICH HAS BUILT NEARLY 2,800 FREE BACKYARD GARDENS FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN THE SOUTH PUGET SOUND SINCE 1993. COMMUNITY FOOD SOLUTIONS LEVERAGES PROBLEMS WITH FOOD AND HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS TO CREATE TRANSFORMATIONS IN BOTH.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PROGRAM REPLICATION (POLLINATION): GRUB HOSTED ONE "PLACE-BASED YOUTH ENGAGEMENT" INSTITUTE IN 2015, HELPED TUMWATER SCHOOL DISTRICT LAUNCH A GRUB-LIKE PROGRAM, AND DEVELOPED FOUR NEW CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) FRAMEWORKS. IN OUR THREE-DAY INSTITUTE, PARTICIPANTS WERE GUIDED BY YOUTH AND STAFF THROUGH CORE TOOLS, MODELS, AND THEORIES GROUNDING GRUB'S YOUTH EMPOWERMENT WORK. TOPICS COVERED IN TRAININGS AND WORKSHOPS INCLUDED COLLABORATIVELY CREATING SHARED STANDARDS, EMPOWERING COMMUNICATION TOOLS, BUILDING ACCOUNTABILITY INTO PROGRAMMING, AND DESIGNING SUCCESSFUL FOOD- AND AGRICULTURE-BASED YOUTH PROGRAMS. FACILITATION AND DESIGN OF THE INSTITUTE AIMED TO DELIVER USEFUL CONTENT (TOOLS, MODELS, RESOURCES, AND MATERIALS) AND, AT THE SAME TIME, SHARE FACILITATION STYLES AND TECHNIQUES WHICH SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS-BASED GROUP PROCESS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0GARDEN-RAISED BOUNTY (GRUB) INSPIRES POSITIVE AND COMMUNITY CHANGE BY BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER AROUND FOOD AND AGRICULTURE. WE PARTNER WITH YOUTH AND PEOPLE WITH LOW INCOMES TO CREATE EMPOWERING INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY FOOD SOLUTIONS. WE OFFER TOOLS AND TRAININGS TO HELP BUILD A JUST AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt12015-16 SAW US ENGAGE MORE THAN 30 YOUNG PEOPLE IN FARM-BASED SUMMER AND SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAMMING.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2SYSTEMS TO CREATE TRANSFORMATIONS IN BOTH.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3AIMED TO DELIVER USEFUL CONTENT (TOOLS, MODELS, RESOURCES, AND MATERIALS) AND, AT THE SAME TIME, SHARE FACILITATION STYLES AND TECHNIQUES WHICH SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS-BASED GROUP PROCESS.
