FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Garden-raised bounty (grub) inspires positive and community change by bringing people together around food and agriculture. We partner with youth and people with low incomes to create empowering individual and community food solutions. We offer tools and trainings to help build a just and sustainable food system.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

(csa) shares and community purchases at youth-run market stands in partnership with osd and new market skills center, grub successfully hosted a 7 week farm-based job and life skills training program in the summer of 2016 to serve mostly capital high school students, while offering two spots to students who attend south sound high school in the neighboring north thurston school district. Youth crew members had the opportunity to attend for 180 hours and earn an educational stipend of up to 1,050, and 1.0 credit in cte intro to agriculture. This program serves youth who are often from low-income households, and/or have had other adverse childhood experiences, and/or who are otherwise not thriving in a traditional school setting. Of the cohort this summer, 58% were eligible for free or reduced meals, 19% had iep/504 plans, 62% were not on-track to graduate; most fell in multiple categories. We also offered seven leadership positions to former participants of grub school where they were given more hours and responsibility; assisting in the management of the farm as farm assistant interns, and mentoring and leading new youth participants in the summer program as peer crew leader interns. These leaders were also given a stipend for their time learning while leading.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Community food solutions leverages problems with food and health care systems to create transformations in both. We envision gardens and our gardening programs as opportunities to support veteran volunteers, low- income gardeners, disengaged youth, and other marginalized people in growing networks of mutual aid and community engagement in the food system. We connect people with the sustainable food movement by sharing information and resources needed to grow fresh, healthy, and culturally-appropriate foods, along with mentorship and opportunities for leadership in the program. Our gardens provide physical and emotional health benefits; gardeners and volunteers are invited into supportive community, while gaining access to nutritious food, tools for increased self-sufficiency, and outdoor activity. Given that six of the top ten causes of death in the u.s. Are linked to behavior and nutrition, and a seventh--self harm--is linked with social isolation (social connection is shown to reduce suicidal ideation), our work to strengthen local food systems does not just have economic and environmental benefits. It also strengthens the overall emotional and physical resilience of our community. Vgp volunteers and staff build raised bed, double dug, and container gardens alongside new gardeners. We provide new gardeners with seeds, plant starts and cover crops, free access to our extensive gardening workshop series, and a connection to the greater gardening community. In 2016, grub offered 30 community workshops on growing, cooking, and storing food. Workshops were free of charge to first- and second- year grub gardeners, and open to the general public for a workshop fee. During the spring of 2016, we built a total of 75 gardens in thurston county. 67 of these gardens were built free of charge with low-income people and families, providing access to fresh food to more than 183 individuals, nearly half of whom were children. Through our food investment garden (fig) project, we also built 8 gardens on a sliding fee scale for community members with mixed incomes. Over 100 community volunteers, as well as grub school youth, contributed more than 1,500 volunteer hours to community food solutions programming, including vgp and fig garden builds, as well as scouting new sites for a future victory farm. We continued to cultivate new partnerships with seamar community health center, olympia pediatrics and others to lay the groundwork for a future prescription "rx" garden project.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Accountability into programming, and designing successful food- and agriculture-based youth programs. Facilitation and design of the institute aimed to deliver useful content (tools, models, resources, and materials) and, at the same time, share facilitation styles and techniques which support relationships-based group process. Pollination programming is about going beyond individual interventions to transform institutions. While engaging and empowering young people is a significant need in our communities, training adult teachers, mentors and role-models creates a powerful ripple effect.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY FOOD SOLUTIONS. COMMUNITY FOOD SOLUTIONS (CFS) PARTNERS WITH PEOPLE WITH LOW INCOMES AND ORGANIZATIONS SERVING THEM TO CREATE GOOD FOOD SOLUTIONS FOR HOUSEHOLDS AND NEIGHBORHOODS. CFS INCLUDES VICTORY FARMERS, A "SWORDS TO PLOWSHARES" PROGRAM FOR VETERAN VOLUNTEERS; FOOD INVESTMENT GARDENS (OR FIGS), SLIDING SCALE GARDENS FOR FOOD-INSECURE PEOPLE WHO LIVE ABOVE 185% OF THE FEDERAL POVERTY LINE; AND THE VICTORY GARDEN PROJECT (VGP), A PROGRAM WHICH HAS BUILT NEARLY 2,900 FREE BACKYARD GARDENS FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN THE SOUTH PUGET SOUND SINCE 1993.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PROGRAM REPLICATION (POLLINATION) GRUB HOSTED ONE "PLACE-BASED YOUTH ENGAGEMENT" INSTITUTE IN THE SPRING OF 2017, HELPED THE TUMWATER SCHOOL DISTRICT AND EATONVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS LAUNCH GRUB-LIKE PROGRAMS, AND HOSTED A 1-DAY TEACHER TRAINING FOR REGIONAL EDUCATORS. IN OUR THREE-DAY INSTITUTE, PARTICIPANTS WERE GUIDED BY YOUTH AND STAFF THROUGH CORE TOOLS, MODELS, AND THEORIES GROUNDING GRUB'S YOUTH EMPOWERMENT WORK. TOPICS COVERED IN TRAININGS AND WORKSHOPS INCLUDED COLLABORATIVELY CREATING SHARED STANDARDS, EMPOWERING COMMUNICATION TOOLS, BUILDING ACCOUNTABILITY INTO PROGRAMMING, AND DESIGNING SUCCESSFUL FOOD- AND AGRICULTURE-BASED YOUTH PROGRAMS.
