Gallery Workshops for Youth and Families: AVIA and Jack Straw Cultural Center presented a series of accessible workshops for blind and visually impaired students, sighted friends, and families. The workshops were designed in tandem with Jack Straw New Media Gallery installations to provide students and families with more understanding of each installation. Students worked with professional installation artists, writers, actors, musicians, and a legally blind audio engineer to create soundscapes, stories, and tactile art. The workshops included accessible accommodations including audio description, Braille, and orientation training on blind issues for staff, artists, and interns. We provided five accessible gallery workshops for blind and visually impaired youth, sighted friends, and families in tandem with Jack Straw New Media Gallery installations by Sasha Patrenko, Whitney Lynn, Erin Slomski-Pritz, Wei Yan, and Zack Bent. We also provided access support for youth workshop Music Creation and Audio Technology Exploration with Michael Bisio and Timothy Hill. We provided An Introduction to Blindness trainings for participating teaching artists, staff, and interns for all programs.$0$8,435
The Blind Youth Audio Project: AVIA, Jack Straw Cultural Center, and the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind provided blind and visually impaired youth with the opportunity to create an original artwork working with a team of artists in Jack Straw's professional recording studios during our annual summer program. AVIA led the drama portion of the program. Our programs provided youth with accessible opportunities to learn about the art of audio production and to tell their own personal stories while collaborating with their peers. The students were inspiring. Students increased their interpersonal skills working with other disabled students and disabled adult role models and gained confidence in their own abilities for dramatic and musical expression.$0$4,071
Access Services: Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences provided blind and visually impaired youth and families with access to the arts through multiple accessible programs that involved visually impaired individuals in the creation and appreciation of art. All programs were free to participants. AVIA also provided descriptive videos and live description and training, including access for installations at the Jack Straw New Media Gallery, an Introduction to Description training, and a series of Introduction to Blindness Training for artists. AVIA also conducted research into current Braille embossers and helped Jack Straw Cultural Center purchase and set up a lightweight embosser to provide on-the-spot Braille as needed for programs such as our joint summer youth program.$0$3,547
