Mission

Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences' mission is to serve the blind and visually impaired residents of Washington state with access to arts events and to develop creative opportunities for blind and visually impaired people. AVIA provides access services for the arts, implements programs that involve visually impaired person in the creation of art, and operates information systems that reach visually impaired people.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Gallery Workshops for Youth and Families: AVIA and Jack Straw Cultural Center presented a series of year-round, hands-on workshops for blind and visually impaired students, sighted friends, and families. The workshops are designed in tandem with Jack Straw New Media Gallery installations, to provide students and families with more understanding of each installation. Students work with professional installation artists, writers, actors, musicians, and a legally blind audio engineer to create soundscapes, stories, and art. The workshops, included accessible accommodations in the forms of audio description and Braille. Orientation training on blind issues for staff, artists, and interns.$0$7,092
The Blind Youth Audio Project: 1)The Blind Youth Audio Project, 7/13-8/8/2018: In its 23nd year, the programs provided training and experience with creative audio techniques including performances in music and radio theater acting, voice training, recording, mixing, editing and production. Participants from throughout Washington State were in 3 groups: 9-12 years, 13-15 years, and 16-18 years. Services also included orientation training on blind issues for staff, artists, and interns. 2) Social Skills and the Arts: March, 2018, AVIA and Jack Straw provided a series of three workshops for blind and visually impaired youth in partnership with the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind. Students shared issues that they had experienced in social situations and learned about possible solutions. Students' experiences became the basis for radio drama stories the students produced together. The series culminated in a gallery workshop based on the artistic processes used by Sangjun Yoo to create a new installation, Blind Film, in the Jack Straw New Media Gallery. 3) Lowell School Parent Panel and Radio Theatre Youth Workshop: January, 2018, AVIA and Jack Straw provided a flash drama workshop for blind and visually impaired youth in conjunction with Seattle Public School's information panel for parents of blind youth.$0$4,517
Access Services: AVIA provided access including audio descriptions and Braille panels for new gallery installations by Chun Shao, L Koo, Matt Shoemaker, Sangjun Yoo at Jack Straw Cultural Center. Services for these installations also included orientation training on blind issues for staff, artists, and interns. AVIA provided an Orientation to Blindness for new artists and volunteers for the Blind Youth Audio Project and Gallery Workshops.
