Mission and Program Overview

Mission

TOGETHER! is on a mission to advance the health and well-being of all young people.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Youth Development: Community Center, After School and Summer ProgramsTOGETHER! operates one year-round Community Center, two After-School Tutoring programs, a Family Library Nights program and two summer programs (one based in a local elementary school and another housed at a rural community center). Through all of these programs we provide services and supports for low-income, high-need and general population youth and families. At the after-school programs and the community center, children receive tutoring and homework help, and participate in activities that further their social, emotional and cognitive development in a safe, supportive environment with appropriate mentors and role models. Youth learn new skills; demonstrate an increase in positive social behaviors; experience greater academic success in school; and learn skills, attitudes and behaviors to remain drug-free and safe. All programs focus on children, youth and families who are economically disadvantaged and who would not normally be able to access other support services. Evergreen Villages Community Center (EVCC), located at a HUD-supported apartment complex, also provides family support services, including access to the food bank and other community resources. Weekly Family Library Nights are provided at one local elementary school during the academic year. There is no charge to participate in any of these programs. In addition, at the two summer programs located at Rainier Elementary School and Bucoda Community Center, we provide healthy meals, literacy support, and activities to enhance social skills and community connection. Youth build garden beds, plant vegetables, paint, and enjoy special featured activities on environmental and community-building topics. Finally, through Voices of Youth, we engage high school students from across Thurston County school districts in skill-building and student-led health and safety projects. Voices of Youth student leaders reported donation of over 1,000 volunteer hours, presented at 3 statewide conferences including Prevention Policy Day and the Washington State Prevention Summit, and many earned scholarships and college admissions letters due in part to their volunteer service with our programs. For the period July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013, the After-School Tutoring, Community Center, Family Library Nights, summer programs and Voices of Youth program served over 1,200 youth and adults, offering well over 1,148 hours of programs and services. Depending on the specific program, performance is measured in a variety of ways including through participant surveys and focus groups, parent and teachers surveys, participant counts, and other data. Evergreen Villages Community Center and After-School programs specifically look at quantitative and qualitative data for improvements in math, reading, science, writing, spelling, social skills and more. Summer programs measure similar things, as well as literacy, while Family Library Nights looks at literacy and other metrics. Finally, Voices of Youth collects process and outcome data to measure increases in knowledge and opportunities; in addition, we record outcomes such as the number of youth who report receiving scholarships, public recognition and/or college acceptance due in part to their participation in this program.
Activity 3
Program Support--Little Red Schoolhouse & Rural Transportation:To help provide access to services for economically disadvantaged families, TOGETHER! provides fiscal services for the Little Red Schoolhouse program and the Rural Transportation project. Little Red Schoolhouse provides school supplies for families in need each year, serving over 3,000 children from the period July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. The Rural Transportation project expands transportation services into rural areas for low-income, elderly and/or persons with disabilities to improve their access to needed services. It also provides access to after-school programs that improve students academic and social skills.

IRS990/Description0Community Mobilization and Education:TOGETHER! works collaboratively with community partners to raise youth and adult awareness about the dangers of substance use and abuse. We educate policymakers about the benefits and strategies for implementing policies that protect children and communities from the harms of substance abuse, and promote substance free coalitions and activities. Youth and adult partner coalitions from across the state were mobilized to plan and implement the annual Prevention Policy Day to raise awareness about the burden of substance abuse and the value of prevention in our state and local communities. Funding supported 3 agency staff and 9 youth and adult volunteers to attend the 2012 Washington State Prevention Summit, as well as staff participation in the planning of events and conferences, Prevention Policy Day. Funding for these efforts came from federal, state, tribal and fee-for-service sources. Our youth engagement efforts empower students to work on preventing tobacco and underage drinking through school and community events and education activities. Media campaigns, posters or public service announcements were produced on these and other substance abuse prevention subjects this fiscal period. Adult coalitions that address youth health and safety also met during this period to address substance abuse and its precursors. A Parent Resource Guide of Thurston County is also published and distributed. In addition, coalition work to prevent and reduce underage alcohol and other substance use in rural Thurston County communities enabled us to implement Strengthening Families classes, family engagement events, and more.
