Activity 2

Community Center and After School Programs: TOGETHER! Operates one Community Center, two After-School Tutoring programs and a Family Library Nights program serving low-income youth and families. At the after-school programs and the community center, children receive tutoring and homework help, and participate in activities that further their social, emotional and cognitive development in a safe, supportive environment with appropriate mentors and role models. Youth learn new skills; demonstrate an increase in positive social behaviors; experience greater academic success in school; and learn skills, attitudes and behaviors to remain drug-free and safe. All programs focus on children, youth and families who are economically disadvantaged and who would not normally be able to access other support services. Evergreen Villages Community Center, located at a HUD-supported apartment complex, also provides family support services, including access to the food bank and other community resources. Weekly Family Library Nights are provided at one local elementary school during the academic year. There is no charge to participate in any of these programs.For the period July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2012, the After-School Tutoring, Community Center and Family Library Nights programs served approximately 305 children and 177 adults, offering 1,148 hours of programs and services. Historically, through surveys and focus groups, youth attendees report improved performance in math, reading, science, writing and spelling as well as improved grades. Youth also report learning how to make friends, cooperate and work as a team, and treat themselves and others with respect. Through the same sources, parents report that our programs help their children get their homework done and get better grades in school, as well as demonstrate stronger problem-solving skills. Teachers report improvement in students math and reading, increased academic engagement, and more complete homework.

Activity 3

Program Support: Little Red Schoolhouse & Rural Transportation:To help provide access to services for economically disadvantaged families. TOGETHER! provides fiscal services for the Little Red Schoolhouse program and the Rural Transportation project. Little Red Schoolhouse provides school supplies for families in need each year, serving over 3,000 children from the period July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. The Rural Transportation project expands transportation services into rural areas for low-income, elderly and/or persons with disabilities to improve their access to needed services. It also provides access to after school programs that improve their academic and social skills.
