We affirm that: Our organization is inclusive tolerant and based on grass-roots collective action; Our educational materials are clear current and technically accurate; We will maintain a sense of humor and goodwill while being outspoken about the issues.
PlantAmnesty's mission is to provide education, resources and advocacy to prevent mal-pruning and preserve urban greenspace. For more than thirty years, PlantAmnesty has been educating the general public and horticultural professionals on industry standard pruning of trees and shrubs to maintain the health of the urban landscape. The care and treatment of our urban forest has taken on high priority in the struggle against climate change as we rely on the carbon offset from older trees and plantings to clean our air and reduce temperatures. PlantAmnestys dynamic and professional classes, workshops and public events are cutting edge in this fight. We partner with the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture, Tribal Communities, WWU Master Gardeners, Bellevue Botanical Gardens, Edmonds College Horticultural Program and many local garden clubs and professional arborists to bring the message of care to the community at large. | Education/Solutions to the Problem: Education and outreach is a key component of PlantAmnestys mission and its premiere program is the Master Pruner certification series. Each year PA provides professional ISA certified classes and workshops for both those working in the field and individual gardeners/home owners. The year-long program consisting of fourteen classes and three workshops required to earn Master Pruner certification are taught via Zoom by professional horticulturists with topics covering fruit tree pruning from apples to cherries, all levels of tree care from 80 ft Douglas Firs to 8 Dogwoods, pruning for the health of major shrubs such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas, renovation of cane growing roses and Forsythia and so much more. The program is repeated in summer and winter in a six week condensed course for professionals through PlantAmnestys partnership with the University of Washingtons Center for Urban Horticulture. The three required hands-on workshops are conducted in the field with professional instructors and volunteers working alongside students on public or private property sites. The Master Pruner classes are open to the public and can be taken for certification by horticultural professionals or as individual classes serving those who just want to know how to prune their Magnolia tree. 2023 saw PA graduate twelve new Master Pruners, teach 1816 students attending 36 lectures and 72 participants in three of the five workshops offered. Twenty-five volunteer instructors donated more than 375 hours in assistance to the series to ensure each student received one-on-one instruction. Plus 2023 saw the continuation of the Cass Turnbull Scholarship program with the addition of five more recipients who were subsidized to complete the series and opening opportunities to those in need. Education also comes from PlantAmnestys website which fielded more than 216,000 hits as people sought information from the organizations library of 30 years of educational articles on topics ranging from technical pruning to plant renovation. PAs YouTube Pruning videos (in English and Spanish) covering everything from the basics to the complicated in pruning continue to be heavily viewed with 266,347 hits. Our social media platform contacts topped 266,000 discussing topics ranging from individual gardening issues to appreciation for pruning and other plant information shared by the organization.PlantAmnestys Referral Service is comprised of 45 vetted, professional arborists and gardeners available for hire by the general public who want the knowledge and expertise these professionals provide, often to correct problems created by commercial gardening services. PA fielded 408 calls for this service in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties acting as liaison between the need and the answer.More than 850 members support PA and receive discounted prices on classes and invitations to Special events as well as quarterly newsletters featuring pruning articles from industry leaders. They can also take advantage of PAs Adopt-a-Plant program which connects people who want to re-purpose their shrubs and small trees to others who willingly take them.Directly Served: 1050 Indirectly Served: 500,000 | - | $50,401 |
| Public Awareness of the Issues: In 2023 PlantAmnesty hosted booths at El Centro de la Rasa to reach the Spanish speaking community and at the Microsoft Expedia Earth Day Celebration. Both events provided one-on-one contact along with free literature (in English and Spanish) and hands on demonstrations. PA participated in the Miyawaki Forest Installation at the Shoreline Historical Museum, a program which is building mini-urban forests around the larger Metropolis to fight the effects of climate change. Public outreach also included Arbor Day which saw thirty-two of PlantAmnestys Referral Service professional arborists at neighboring city Auburns Soos Creek pruning damaged trees and improving the health of others. And, again, thirty-five of PAs Referral Service arborists swung into action on Arborist Donated Work Day at the Rhody Ridge Arboretum in Snohomish County. Both areas are heavily utilized by the public so care of aging trees is crucial for the health and safety of all. PlantAmnesty hosted five Meetings of Like Minds for members and the public covering topics as diverse as Seattles New Tree Ordinance (and its impact on the urban forest and home ownership) to RainWise gardening to an Indigenous Peoples program (presented in conjunction with tribal Windz of Change), about Seattles forest history and our tree elders. | Engender Respect for Plants and their Diversity: This aspect of the PA may seem superfluous but is actually essential in changing the publics viewpoint of how plants and trees impact our environment and aid in climate change. As long as humans view trees and plants as incidental, the ecosystem is at risk. PAs work in this area includes: The Cass Turnbull Garden is a long term program of PA begun in 2018 after the death of founder Cass Turnbull. The property was donated by the philanthropic Bullitt Family to the City of Seattle and PA has worked with Seattle Parks and Recreation to continue to build an urban oasis of ADA accessible paths, public art and overlooks with more than 300 donated plantings. 250 volunteers have donated over 12,000 hours of their time and expertise to the creation of the garden. For 2023 under conditions dictated by Seattle Parks and Recreation, volunteers have contributed 765 hours weeding, raking, mulching, watering and pruning regularly in the garden and selected areas of the 1.75-acre property, Fund the Last 6000 campaign is an effort to find, document and protect Seattle's remaining majestic trees. The name of the campaign comes from the 2016 Seattle Tree Canopy Cover report, which noted that there were only 6,338 trees of trunk diameter of 30 inches and greater left in the city. The campaign officially launched on April 1, 2019, and due to popular demand, continues to accept information on majestic trees. The focus currently is to analyze and report the key points of our census findings to community groups and create neighborhood documentation of the majestic trees. The program has been active in supporting the Garry Oaks Conservancy, as well as working with the City of Seattle on its new tree ordinance and land use policies.A popular PA program of Plant Walks featuring professionals in the field identifying and discussing characteristics of trees in the urban forest resumed in 2023 for members and the public. These Walks offer both exercise and tree identification and information in a casual setting. Featured 2023 walks: Dunn Gardens, an Olmsted-designed garden, lead by Michelle Rau. Michell also took the helm at the second walk the UWs Center for Urban Horticulture grounds and gardens. Directedly served: 57Yard Make-Overs bring a crew of volunteer pruners into homeowner settings to renovate and renew overgrown and overwhelmed yards. Two of these labor intensive events in 2023 brought the talents of more than 27 volunteers together for the benefit of the home-owners and PlantAmnesty. The Seattle Heritage Tree Program nominates outstanding trees in the greater Seattle area for conservation and preservation. This Committee is comprised of PA arborists often working in conjunction with homeowners upon whose property the trees grow. The Committee nominates the trees and works in coordination with the City of Seattle to map the tree for public access and awareness. Homeowners receive a plaque for their tree. Ten trees were recognized in 2023. There are currently more than 250 heritage trees in Seattle. PlantAmnesty and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens partnered again to deliver the annual Urban Forest Symposium. Continuing the tribal relationships PA established with the Puyallup and Duwamish tribes in 2020, PlantAmnesty again partnered with Windz of Change tribal alliance for the 2023 Urban Forest Symposium: Interweaving Indigenous Eco-Ethics & Healing into Urban Forestry. The symposium focuses on timely topics to bring together a diverse audience including Indigenous peoples, arborists, land managers, policy-makers, designers, program managers, municipal planners, volunteers, students and advocates. The 2023 Urban Forestry Symposium focused on Indigenous environmental stewardship, decolonizing climate justice narratives, and food sovereignty and access, and highlighted the work of practitioners who are striving to improve our urban forests across various municipalities in the Puget Sound area. The program took place at Intellectual House on the UW Seattle campus, with options to attend in-person or online. Directly served: 122 online and 144 in personPlantAmnestys Special Events for 2023:John Grade Studio Tour: International artist John Grade opened his studio for a ticketed PA event and showed participants the bones of his work recreating trees and their root systems with astonishing details. Johns work with trees creates public awareness of the issues of not only urban forests but our national forests face in the current weather climate. Recent and current projects draw inspiration from mountains in Nevadas Great Basin, highland forests in Guatemala and changing landforms above the Arctic Circle. These projects investigate assisted migration of trees, underground mycorrhizal and fungal networks, changing river systems and ocean currents, earthquakes, and directly engaging forest wildfires and windstorms. The 2023 Urban Forestry Symposium focused on Indigenous environmental stewardship, decolonizing climate justice narratives, and food sovereignty and access, and highlighted the work of practitioners who are striving to improve our urban forests across various municipalities in the Puget Sound |
