| Education/Solutions to the Problem: Education and outreach is a key component of PlantAmnestys mission and its premiere program is the Master Pruner certification series. Each year PA provides professional ISA certified classes and workshops for both those working in the field and individual gardeners/home owners. The year-long program consisting of fourteen classes and three workshops required to earn Master Pruner certification are taught via Zoom by professional horticulturists with topics covering fruit tree pruning from apples to cherries, all levels of tree care from 80 ft Douglas Firs to 8 Dogwoods, pruning for the health of major shrubs such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas, renovation of cane growing roses and Forsythia and so much more. The program is repeated in summer and winter in a six-week condensed course for professionals through PlantAmnestys partnership with the University of Washingtons Center for Urban Horticulture. The three required hands-on workshops are conducted in the field with professional instructors and volunteers working alongside students on public or private property sites. The Master Pruner classes are open to the public and can be taken for certification by horticultural professionals or as individual classes serving those who just want to know how to prune their Magnolia tree. 2024 saw PA graduate 9 new Master Pruners, teach 786 students attending 38 lectures and 82 participants across the five workshops offered. 34 professional instructors were assisted by15 volunteers who donated more than 243 hours to the workshop series to ensure each student received one-on-one instruction. Five new recipients were tapped for the 2024 Cass Turnbull Master Pruner Scholarship program which subsidizes those in need. Education also comes from PlantAmnestys website which fielded more than 18,302 hits as people sought information from the organizations library of 30+ years of educational articles on topics ranging from technical pruning to plant renovation. PAs YouTube Pruning videos (in English and Spanish) covering everything from the basics to the complicated in pruning continue to be heavily utilized with 279,673 views/hits. Our social media platform contacts topped 107,404 discussing topics ranging from individual gardening issues to appreciation for pruning and other plant information shared by the organization. PA fielded 1,972 queries by phone. PlantAmnestys Referral Service is comprised of 38 vetted, professional arborists and gardeners available for hire by the general public who want the knowledge and expertise these professionals provide, often to correct problems created by commercial gardening services. PA fielded 885 calls for this service in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties acting as liaison between the need and the answer.More than 759 members support PA and receive discounted prices on classes and invitations to special events as well as quarterly newsletters featuring pruning articles from industry leaders. They can also take advantage of PAs Adopt-a-Plant program which connects people who want to re-purpose their shrubs and small trees to others who willingly take them. 49 plants found a new home in 2024.Directly Served: 2,660 Indirectly Served: 500,000 | - | $87,591 |
| Creating Public Awareness of the Issues: PlantAmnesty uses any and all avenues to bring awareness of proper plant pruning to the general public. Boothing events provide PlantAmnesty with the one-on-one opportunity to reach new demographics in a festive setting. In 2024 PlantAmnesty returned to the NW Flower and Garden Show five-day event as well as traveled east of the mountains to host an informational booth in Wenatchee, WA. Locally, PAs participation at The Sammamish Valley Pollinator Fest, the Ballard Locks for Salmon Day and the West Seattle Ecology Fair rounded out the years boothing events which included the distribution of free literature (in English and Spanish) and hands on demonstrations. Public outreach also included Arbor Day which saw teams of PlantAmnestys Referral Service professional arborists at South Seattles Wisteria Park pruning damaged plants and improving the health of others. PlantAmnestys Speakers Bureau provided expert Speakers to Garden Clubs, Societies and other horticultural agencies to explain the organizations mission and provide pruning education; for 2024 these included the Shark Garden, Bellevue Botanical Garden, WAMOA and WRPA. PlantAmnesty hosted four Meetings of Like Minds for members and the public covering topics as diverse as Mason Bees Renting and Care, Bob Fincham Dwarf Conifers grafting and propagation, Miyawaki Forest History and Science and Street Trees of Seattle author talk and discussion. PlantAmnesty was also the topic of discussion for a new podcast by Western Washington State Cooperative Extension/Master Gardeners called Prevent Crimes Against Nature and featured PlantAmnesty instructor Keith Dekker dispensing correct pruning guidance and plant health information. And an article in the Seattle Times by Erica Browne Grivas provided basic pruning information from PlantAmnestys Tucker Brakken and instructor Christina Pfieffer as well as information regarding the organization and its mission. | Engender Respect for Plants and their Diversity: This aspect of the PA may seem superfluous but is essential in changing the publics viewpoint of how plants and trees impact our environment and aid in climate change. As long as humans view trees and plants as incidental, the ecosystem is at risk. PAs work in this area includes: The Cass Turnbull Garden is a past program that PA continues to support with volunteers and community advocacy. Begun in 2018 after the death of founder Cass Turnbull the garden is located on the property of the philanthropic Bullitt Family who gifted it to the City of Seattle. PA has worked with The Cass Turnbull Foundation and Seattle Parks and Recreation to continue to build an urban oasis of ADA accessible paths, public art and overlooks with more than 320 donated plantings. 325 volunteers have donated over 14,000 hours of their time and expertise to the creation and on-going care of the garden including 491 hours weeding, raking, mulching, watering and pruning regularly in the garden and selected areas of the 1.75-acre property. Fund the Last 6000 campaign is an effort to find, document and protect Seattle's remaining majestic trees. Since April 2019 the Last 6000 Campaign has been documenting Seattles remaining majestic trees with a trunk size of 30 inches and greater. Nearly 1600 majestic trees from every neighborhood have been submitted to FTL6K tree census by over 500 volunteers. Tree education walks have been offered throughout the city. Additionally, the campaign has had over 15,000 unique visitors to its website. There are currently over 3300 followers on the campaigns Instagram account.Plant Walks are a hugely popular PA program featuring professionals in the field identifying and discussing characteristics of trees in the urban forest for members and the public. These Walks offer exercise, tree identification and information in a casual setting. This Committee is comprised of PA arborists often working in conjunction with homeowners upon whose property the trees grow. The Committee nominates the trees and works in coordination with the City of Seattle to map the tree for public access and awareness. Homeowners receive a plaque for their tree. There are currently more than 250 heritage trees in Seattle. PlantAmnesty and the University of Washington Botanic Gardens partnered with Windz of Change tribal liaison to deliver the annual Urban Forest Symposium. The 2024 theme was Native Forests and Health: Living in Relationships. The focus was on linkages between the health of urban forests and people, and how Indigenous ways of knowing can assist in reaching healing outcomes including how eco-cultural frameworks aid in our ability to restore, preserve and steward urban forests. Speakers focused on eco-cultural consciousness and identity, the incorporation of Indigenous values, rights, and knowledge into Sustainable Forestry Initiative standards, human-centered urban design, Seattle Parks and Recreations shifting approach to park management, and local organizations working to protect and strengthen urban forests in the Puget Sound region. An interactive activity showed how geological history and influences have shaped our forests, waters, lands, and lives. The overall goal was to build collaborative relationships between inter-Tribal and non-Tribal community groups, agencies (City of Seattle, King County, City of Tacoma, Department of Natural Resources, US Forest Service, and King Conservation District), non-profit organizations (Sierra Club, Tacoma Tree Foundation, PlantAmnesty, and Dirt Corps), educational institutions (UW American Indian Studies, UW Tacoma, Bellevue College, and the Burke Museum), and individuals in the collective action urban forestry networks.Directly served: 100 Indirectly Serviced: 6000 | - | $39,488 |
