Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

Members make annual contributions to the organization

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The Board of Directors received the draft 990 prior to the June board meeting. They had a week to review the document and the opportunity to ask questions via email or discuss the draft during the board meeting. The board voted to approve the Form 990 before it was submitted to the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

New board members are required to review and submit a signed copy of the conflict of interest policy. Each board member is asked to review and submit a new signed copy on an annual basis.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The Board of Directors performs an annual performance review for our Executive Director, both to assess job performance and to consider compensation adjustments. Our board leadership also consults published, third party sources to stay current on compensation ranges for Executive Directors in our region. No other officers are compensated. All members of our Board of Directors contribute their time as volunteers.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Our governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financials are available upon request. Additionally, our financial statements are publicly available on the Guidestar website and we mailed a letter summarizing our sources of revenues and expenditures, including acknowledgement of individual donors by name, to all individuals who contributed to our organization over the past year.

IRS990/Desc0Climate Change: Believing that climate change is a public health crisis, we work to reduce use of greenhouse gas emitting fuels, to support clean energy, and to advocate for policies that reduce the threat of climate change. We do direct advocacy with decision makers, and we engage in education to help healthcare professionals understand the links between climate change and human health. In 2016 we hosted two Health Professionals for Climate Advocacy workshops, to engage additional health professionals in climate education and advocacy. Approximately 30 people attended these trainings, and in turn they delivered 20 presentations to about 500 people. We also delivered educational seminars about climate and health to medical professionals through presentations at medical facilities (including hospitals in Seattle and Grays Harbor). We advocated against further development and investments in fossil fuel infrastructure (primarily coal and oil) at various hearings around the state, and we supported development of legislation that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Washington State.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Nuclear Weapons Abolition: Because the use of even one nuclear weapon would have disastrous consequences, we work to prevent the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons. Our efforts in 2016 focused primarily on stopping the complete rebuild of the United States' nuclear arsenals. We shared information with members of Congress and their staff, hosted public education events to build greater awareness of nuclear threats, and published articles on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. We also established the Washington Coalition to Stop the New Nuclear Arms Race, comprised of leaders in peace organizations, the labor movement, environmental groups, communities of color, faith groups, and health professionals who are working collaboratively to reduce and/or eliminate all components of the proposed rebuild of the US nuclear arsenal.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Hanford: We raised public awareness of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and the importance of preventing future environmental contamination from nuclear waste, through public presentations and classroom presentations to students. We also administered an interactive arts exhibit on Hanford at Cascadia College/UW-Bothell in the spring of 2016.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Income Inequality: We provided educational presentations and other opportunities for health professionals and the public to better understand how wealth inequality is a root cause of poor health outcomes. We partnered with the Washington Work and Family Coalition to support the movement for an effective, mandated, statewide family leave act which would provide paid leave for new parents.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1Middle East Initiatives: We sponsored delegations of volunteer medical practitioners who traveled to Gaza in January and November 2016, with the goal of promoting peace through service. Teams delivered pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies, taught courses to health professionals in Gaza, and provided physical and mental health service to patients.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2Other: WPSR staff, members and volunteers participated in several other program activities. We supported the work of the Oregon/Washington PSR Joint Nuclear Power Task Force to provide increased scrutiny of Washington's only operating nuclear power plant, a plant with similar risks to the one that melted down in Fukushima, Japan in 2011. The task force was successful in encouraging the Seattle City Council to adopt a resolution to provide stricter oversight of the state's nuclear power plant and to direct Seattle City Light to move toward carbon-free and nuclear-free energy. We also supported the work of our student chapter at the University of Washington. They hosted several events for health science students, including seminars on environmental toxins in the home and health-based advocacy.
