Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility engages the community to create a healthy, just, peaceful and sustainable world. We take on the gravest current threats to human health and survival -- nuclear weapons, economic inequity, and a climate crisis driven by dependence on fossil fuels.

Preventing major threats to health and safety

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Hanford: We raised public awareness of Hanford and the importance of preventing future environmental contamination from nuclear waste, through public presentations held around the state, classroom presentations to students, and workshops for educators. We also administered an interactive exhibit on Hanford, which appeared at Whitman College in Walla Walla. A group of WPSR members took an educational tour of the Hanford site.$0$73,726
Other: Staff, members and volunteers also participated in several other program activities. Members of our Income Inequality Task Force researched the health consequences of wealth disparity and developed a paper for publication on the topic. They also conducted a series of street interviews to talk with people about income inequality and health and to gauge public interest and awareness of our lack of mandated parental leave. We also supported the work of our student chapter at the University of Washington, and the work led by Oregon PSR, to shut down our region's only nuclear plant which resides in Washington. We also invested time in focusing on our communications with members and the community.$0$41,753
Climate Change: Believing that climate change is a public health crisis, we work to reduce use of greenhouse gas emitting fuels, to support clean energy, and to advocate for policies that reduce the threat of climate change. Our Climate Change Task Force researched and published health and safety consequences of transferring crude oil by rail, storing large volumes of oil in port terminals, and exporting oil to refineries by barge or vessel. We presented public health consequences of crude oil at public forums (including Bellingham, Oakville and Olympia) and educational seminars about climate and health to medical professionals (including at a public health conference and two hospital grand rounds). We advocated against further development and investments in fossil fuel infrastructure at various hearings around the state, and we supported development of legislation that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Washington State.$0$30,188
Middle East Initiatives: We sponsored a delegation of 11 volunteer medical practitioners who traveled to Gaza in March, with the goal of promoting peace through service. Teams delivered pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies, taught courses to health professionals in Gaza, and provided physical and mental health service to patients. Volunteers hosted a public event in Seattle to tell others about their work and about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.$21,652$26,110
Nuclear Weapons Abolition: Our efforts focused generally on preventing nuclear weapons proliferation and particularly on stopping the rebuild of the nation's nuclear arsenals. Members published articles on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, shared information with Congressional staff persons, voiced our support for the Iran deal, and held a public event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.$0$4,252

IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0On occasion, we voice support for bills and other policies that would provide increased protection from threats to health. This is primarily related to bills that would limit proliferation of nuclear weapons, bills that would limit oil and coal train derailments and spills, and legislation that would reduce greenhouse gas pollution. We do this sometimes by sending a letter of concern or support directly to an elected representative or governmental agency, or meeting with them or their staff. On a limited basis, we will include information about legislative bills in a newsletter or emails to our membership. We spent very few hours in 2015 engaged in lobbying activities.
