Mission

Vocational training and job placement services for people with disabilites.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Training and employment - during 2011 orion partnered with an array of funding and referral agencies to support over 300 individuals. Our services included assessment, skill training, work adjustment training, work experience, job development and job retention services. Our partners in 2011 included: division of vocational rehabilitation, labor & industries, federal way school district, puyallup school district, enumclaw school district, federal way community development block grant, department of education - projects with industries and an array of community non-profits. Our process - each participant in our program receives assistance from our professional staff designed to address his or her particular needs. This may include services such as vocational counseling, goal development, job development and job retention services. Orion's vocational counselors assist participants in our training programs with goal development and support participants in gaining the skills and behavior necessary to get and keep employment. Orion's job developers provide individualized job search assistance to participants both before and after they find a job suited to their needs and abilities. Clerical/customer service program: our clerical/customer service program provides both vocational assessment of skills and work behaviors as well as skills training. Skills are taught through self-paced or small group instruction and include interactive exercises and hands-on learning. Our instructor provides assistance to each student as they work through self-paced modules and/or participate in group instruction. During their program, each student identifies a vocational goal and works with their orion team to develop specific learning objectives to achieve their goal. Our vocational counselors work with each student and our instructor to monitor and address barriers to employment related to soft skills. In 2011, we supported individuals referred by:division of vocational rehabilitation programs included assessment and skills training. Results of our clerical/customer service program: in 2011, our clerical/customer service program supported 50 individuals; we supported 16 graduates in locating community employment. Job development/job retention: orion offers each program graduate and job seeker from the community 1:1 assistance in their job search. The goal of our job development services is to assist each person to locate employment which matches their strengths while minimizing their barriers. Job retention services support each individual and their employer for at least 90 days on the job. Our projects with industry program targets individuals with disabilities who have been unemployed for at least six months and who also have an educational barrier and / or a criminal background. In 2011, we supported individuals referred by: division of vocational rehabilitation, city of federal way - community development block grant, projects with industry program through the department of education, department of labor and industries, veterans administration school districts, community non-profits.results of our job development and job retention services: in 2011, orion supported 203 individuals in job development and job retention services, we assisted 122 individuals in locating community employment, the average wage at placement was $12.07/hour; the average wage after 90 days on the job was $12.92/hour. The average hours worked per week was 32. During 2011, orion assisted our job seekers to find work with over 87 employers. Orion assisted 110 individuals in locating employment in the community during 2011: administrative clerical jobs $8.77 to $22.00; labor $10.51 to $18.00; manufacturing $8.67 to $27.00; professional $14.35 to $28.00; warehouse driver $8.75 to $16.70; food service worker $8.67 to $15.32; medical $12.50 to $27.00. Contact center - in 2009 orion expanded our training and workforce development capabilities by entering the contact center industry and by adding a customer relations service and training center. The training center supports commercial cunsomer relations contracts while providing a platform for training individuals with disabilities for employment in the teleservices industry. Results of our contact center: in 2011, orion supported 11 individuals in our contact center training program; we supported 4 participants in locating community employment.
