Mission and Program Overview

Mission

[Continued from Page 1] AND ADVANCED DATA ANALYTICS THAT ENABLE REMOTE MONITORING AND DATA COLLECTION FROM ALMOST ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Air pollution and clean cookstove monitoring: we have engineered an alternative to traditional expensive carbon-measuring instruments in the form of a low-cost, cellphone-driven air pollution sensor. We have deployed our air pollution sensor in connection with a clean cookstove distribution project in india sponsored by the united nations environment programme, in order to measure the amount of soot that is emitted by both traditional cooking fires and clean-burning stoves. With these measurement technologies, we are developing a system that can collect data about airborne emissions and help verify the amount of carbon emissions saved by switching to clean cookstoves. Our service accomplishments include: (1) developing software for a companion sensor that tracks cookstove usage; (2) development of a working prototype of the application and hardware sensor that underwent pilot testing and scientific validation; (3) testing of several sensors in a remote village in india under a variety of real-life cooking situations.
Activity 3
Water quality: we are working with a u.s. Nonprofit and an indonesian ngo to build a communication system that gathers crowdsourced reports about water services for the urban poor in indonesia. Using sms, email, or the internet, residents in two indonesian cities will be able to remotely report problematic conditions such as poor water quality, leaking pipes, needed infrastructure improvements and poor water services. They will also be able to view responses from utilities and other water providers about the status of repairs, service calls and other actions to address complaints. This project will bring information from both residents and utilities into a centralized web platform that will help water providers be more accountable to their customers and provide residents with transparent information. Additionally, it will create a highly accessible, granular data set about water conditions in indonesia, which can help governments, civic organizations and water managers develop better ways of getting clean water to more people. Our service accomplishments include: (1) participating in user-centered design sessions with indonesian residents; (2) making presentations for, discussing the project with and negotiating support from water utility officials in two indonesian cities; (3) researching and preparing a study of similar public-benefit water service improvement projects around the world to determine best practices; (4) researching design and open-source code options for the system; and (5) designing a feature set for the system.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0WATER QUALITY: WE ARE WORKING WITH A U.S.

IRS990/Description0WIRELESS ACOUSTIC MONITORING OF ENDANGERED SEABIRDS: THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP LOW-COST, EASY-TO-USE WIRELESS ACOUSTIC SENSORS FOR MONITORING WILDLIFE IN REMOTE LOCATIONS. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, WE ARE COMBINING COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MOBILE PHONES AND OFF-THE-SHELF COMPONENTS THAT CAN BE ASSEMBLED AND OPERATED WITHOUT SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE. OUR SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE: (1) DESIGNING AND TESTING ACOUSTIC SENSOR HARDWARE, SOLAR-POWERED, WATERPROOF MESH NETWORK SYSTEMS, AND SERVER-BASED SYS TEM SOFTWARE; (2) CONDUCTING FIELD TESTS OF THE SYSTEM AT WILDLIFE RESERVES AND ON SEVERAL REMOTE ISLANDS IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN SUCH AS: (I) BLUE OAK RANCH RESERVE IN SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, (II) WEST ANACAPA ISLAND IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK IN CALIFORNIA, (III) MATZU ARCHIPELAGO NEAR TAIWAN, (IV) YOUNGER LAGOON RESERVE IN SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA, (V) SOUTHEAST FARALLON ISLAND OFF THE COAST OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, AND (VI) TERN ISLAND, PAPAHANAUMOKUAKEA MARINE NATIONAL MONUMENT IN HAWAII. OUR TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTS MAKE IT EASY TO RECORD THE ACTIVITY OF SEABIRDS AND OTHER ANIMALS LOCATED ON SUCH REMOTE LOCATIONS. WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SANTA CRUZ, WE ARE DEVELOPING A METHOD FOR CONVERTING THOSE AUTOMATED RECORDINGS INTO ACCURATE ESTIMATES OF BIRD POPULATIONS. OUR WORK ON THIS PROJECT HAS IMPROVED THE CAPABILITIES OF WILDLIFE SENSORS AND WE ANTICIPATE IT WILL HELP BRING THE TECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE REACH OF A WIDE VARIETY OF END USERS INTERESTED IN STUDYING WILDLIFE AND SENSITIVE ECOSYSTEMS.
