RESEARCH GRANTS: The CLL Global Research Foundation's primary activity is to accelerate research. The need is urgent to accelerate promising, untapped areas of research. CLL Global provides grants through several mechanisms to fund novel, patient-oriented concepts. The intention is to fund the best CLL science in the world. In particular, CLL Global targets monoclonal antibodies, prognostic factors, vaccines & gene therapy, CLL survival pathway, genetics, molecular targets and drug development. A Scientific Advisory Board develops the research priorities and oversees the development and implementation of the submission, evaluation and funding process for grant application cycles. SAB members have extensive experience in treating CLL patients, developing new drugs and other tools and studying various aspects of the disease. The research grant section also allows support of postdoctoral fellows conducting a CLL specific project. In 2011, CLL Global awarded $770,000* as research/individual grants. Applicants initially submit proposals for up to $100,000 in funding for one year. Applicants identify project milestones. Upon demonstration of sufficient progress, investigators will be considered for a second year of funding.*After a final reconciliation of expenses, recipients return any unused funds. In 2011, $207 was refunded, reducing the 2011 grant amount to $769,793.

Activity 3

GLOBAL COLLABORATION: Investigators from throughout the world have the opportunity to apply for CLL Global's grants. CLL Global believes strongly that global participation will be necessary to solve the CLL puzzle. CLL Global is encouraging the establishment of collaborative working groups in a number of countries. Selected countries have been identified based on specific research capabilities and/or the ability to answer unique research questions. CLL Global plans to support the initial infrastructure and research efforts in these countries. In previous years, initial funding was provided to Israel and Australia. No additional grants were expensed in 2011. Decisions remain outstanding on whether to award additional funds. In 2011, CLL Global enhanced its efforts to educate its global collaborators by hosting a symposium at the American Society of Hematology meeting. This was a pilot program. A decision has not been made as to whether to continue these efforts.
