Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the Horizon Ensemble is to enrich the artistic and cultural lives of our communities of musicians and audiences through our orchestral concerts. We serve the community of the Boston area by providing accessible musical performances at no cost in a historical space. We also support the community of musicians in Boston by acting as a high-level ensemble playing unique repertoire with a relatively short rehearsal cycle. Finally, we further the artistic development of the community of young composers by providing them with performances of large-ensemble pieces, a much-desired opportunity.

The 5th conceert of Horizon Ensemble was delivered on Dec 11, 2022. Performed music by: Brian Daniel Ross, Status Quo for brass ensemble; Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Idyll; Fanny Hensel, Overture in C; and Franz Schubert, Symphony No. 6, "Little C Major". About this Event: What a time it's been! The end of the year arrives, and we arrive safely through all the trials and tribulations 2022 has brought us. Let's enjoy a relaxing evening with some lovely pieces, which all live within the sunny world of C major. Horizon Ensemble opened with Status Quo, a brass ensemble piece written by our friend Brian Daniel Ross, which took the audience from a stark martial procession into a warm chorale. From here the audience would find themselves in the Idyll by the British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a tender, loving air, soothing and lounging. After this was the energetic Overture in C Major by Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) - the composer's only foray into purely symphonic music, full of bold and striking musical choices and events. Then, the concert finished with Franz Schubert's cheerful Symphony No. 6, nicknamed the "Little C Major."$7,000$454
The 4th concert of Horizon Ensemble was delivered on August 28, 2022. Concert Title: Summertime Scenes. Concert Theme: Of Summertime Memories, of Trepidation, and of Livly Fury. Music presented included: Ben Nacar - Dodecatet (2020); Zach Hicks - Ready or Not (2022); and Louise Farrenc - Symphony No.3 in G minor (1847). Live recording available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utEzDF-tFxI. As summer reaches its high finish, Horizon Ensemble invited their music followers to celebrate the memories we have made in this bright season! The concert began with Ben Nacar's Dodecatet for 12 instruments, inspired by images of nature and scenes from Homer's epic Odyssey. Next, it was the world premiere of Zach Hicks's Ready or Not, a chamber orchestra piece full of sprightly energy and rhythm. Finally, the concert finished with the lively Third Symphony of Louise Farrenc, a French Romantic composer who was the only female professor at the Paris Conservatory in the entire 19th century!$2,313$2,279

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt0$6650 was the concert hall rental fees that Horizon Ensemble paid to the Church of the Covenant of Boston for the 4 concerts and one other special sponsored concert held in the church (2 in 2021 and 3 in 2022). The Church of the Covenant is a historic church at 67 Newbury Street in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. A National Historic Landmark, it was built in 1865-1867 by the Central Congregational Church and is now affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and the United Church of Christ. The rental fees that Horizon Ensemble provided to the Church help restore the stained-glass windows of the church and we believe that will continue to be of great historical and cultural value for the future generations.

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Horizon Ensemble founded on May 31st, 2021. The application for an IRS 501(c)3 status was filed in December 2022 and received the IRS approval on Feb 15, 2023. The effective date of exemption was set on May 31st, 2021, per our request. The Horizon Ensemble will be operating based on fiscal year ending on December 31st. The first filing of Horizon Ensemble's FY22 Tax Return (for 1/1/2022 to 12/31/2022). Given that Horizon Ensemble's operating revenue has been under $50,000 since inception, Horizon Ensemble is not required to file a 990EZ return form. Annual ePostcard filings were performed for 2022, 2023, and 2024. Horizon Ensemble did want to file the 990EZ simply to build a sound financial track record for this organization. However, last year, when we attempted to do the on-line 990EZ filing, we found a mistake made in our IRS registration record. For whatever reasons, the entity's name for Horizon Ensemble showed up in the IRS's record as "Julian Gau". Julian Gau is the founder of Horizon Ensemble. Somehow there was a mixed up in the registered entity name for this EIN 87-3058480. While we have submitted a change request to the IRS since several months ago. We have not received any response from the IRS, yet. While we wait, we kind of relay in our on-line 990EZ filing process. Not hearing back from the IRS for more than several months, while other grant application processes have been going on still, we feel that it would make sense for us to just file the on-line 990EZ still while we continue to wait for the IRS to get back to us on our request for the entity name correction. This was the reason why we are filing our 990EZ via this online portal this late in the year.
