Horizon Ensemble Concert 10: Summer Memories was delivered on August 11, 2024. As sunny days flourish, the Horizon Ensemble performed music by friends and music of history. This concert included two premieres: Liang Si by Yangfan Xu, a dancelike evocation of the harvest, and A Moment of Everything by Jackson Carter, celebrating the joys of college days. Horizon Ensemble also played Maurice Ravel's stately, songful Pavane for a Dead Princess; Gabriela Lena Frank's rhythmic, Peruvian-influenced Elegía Andina, and Florence Price's mysterious The Oak. The Ensemble finished with Samuel Barber's nostalgic portrait Knoxville: Summer of 1915, featuring soprano Julia Pottinger. Along the way, local Boston-area poets were invited to share some of their work to match the music!$6,000$5,193
Horizon Ensemble Concert 11.5: Shades of Autumn was delivered on November 16, 2024. "Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness..." The Horizon Ensemble presented a concert of chamber and orchestral music inspired by autumn and invited Boston music fans to join them on Saturday, November 16 at 3:00 PM in the Church of the Covenant for some vibrant music amongst the falling leaves and enchanting winds. The concert began with Jennifer Higdon's Autumn Music for wind quintet, a soulfully flowing portrait of this season. Next is Three Moods in New England by our friend Hayley Qin, in which seven wind and brass instruments evoke nature-born memories of Vermont, Connecticut, and Forest Hills. Followed by Igor Stravinsky's lively Dumbarton Oaks Concerto combines classical aesthetics with lively modern rhythmic action. Finally, the full Horizon Ensemble came together for Joachim Raff's rarely-performed Symphony No. 10, "To Autumntime", featuring melancholy sighs and ghostly waltzes besides festive hunting calls.$5,000$4,408
Horizon Ensemble Concert 11: Freedom, was delivered on October 6, 2024. "The caged bird sings of freedom." The Horizon Ensemble celebrated the music of freedom as October's winds start to rush upon us. The concert began with the first surviving symphony by a woman: the Symphony in C Major by Marianna Martines, a Viennese composer and pianist who was friends with Mozart and Haydn. Next were two pieces by friends: Shaheed by Andrés Ballesteros, a string orchestra piece inspired by the Arab Spring; and Laleh-zar (Tulip Field) by Sepehr Pirasteh, drawing from the Iranian symbolism of tulips as representing love and sacrifice. In the end, the concert finished with Johannes Brahms, who wrote his Symphony No. 3 in F Major around his personal motto: "free but happy".$4,500$4,356
Horizon Concert 9: Forays, was held on April 27, 2024. As the weather warms, we celebrated music from composers' own springtimes: their first forays into the orchestral world. A Piano Concerto by our friend Ryan Johnston was premiered, featuring pianist Andrew Cannestra. With soulful tunes and soaring melodies, this new concerto foretells a bright future for orchestral writing. The second half of the program is the Gaelic Symphony by Boston's own Amy Beach, the first major symphony by an American woman! The name comes from Amy Beach's inspiration: she infused her symphony with the flowing, sprightly songs of northern Europe.$3,800$3,623
Horizon Ensemble Concert 8.5 : Cycles was delivered on February 24, 2024. In this concert, chamber music by Kate Soper, Olivia Jones, Chole Smith, and J.S. Bach were presented. Octet (1900) by George Enescu, arranged for string orchestra was performed at the 2nd half of the concert. In addition to Horizon Ensemble members, guest performers, Der Gestanke and The Ringers, were invited to share their performances with the audiences.$3,000$2,997

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Horizon Ensemble founded on May 31st, 2021. The application for an IRS 501(c)3 status was filed in December 2022 and received the IRS approval on Feb 15, 2023. The effective date of exemption was set on May 31st, 2021, per our request. The Horizon Ensemble will be operating based on fiscal year ending on December 31st. The first filing of Horizon Ensemble's FY22 Tax Return should be for 1/1/2022 to 12/31/2022. Given that Horizon Ensemble's operating revenue has been under $50,000 since inception, Horizon Ensemble is not required to file a 990EZ return form. Annual ePostcard filings were performed for 2022, 2023, and 2024. However, Horizon Ensemble did want to file the 990EZ simply to build a sound financial track record for this organization. in 2023, when we attempted to do the on-line 990EZ filing for 2021 and 2022, we found a mistake made in our IRS registration record. For whatever reasons, the entity's name for Horizon Ensemble showed up in the IRS's record as "Julian Gau". Julian Gau is the founder of Horizon Ensemble. Somehow there was a mixed up in the registered entity name for this EIN 87-3058480. While we have submitted two change requests via US mails to the IRS since several months ago, we have not received any response from the IRS, yet. While we wait, we know that we are relaying our on-line 990EZ filing process. Not hearing back from the IRS for more than several months, while other grant application processes have been going on still, we feel that it would make sense for us to just file the on-line 990EZ still while we continue to wait for the IRS to get back to us on our request for the entity name correction. This was the reason why we are filing our 990EZ via this online portal for our 2022, 2023, and 2024 returns this late in the year.
