Mission

Washington Wildlife First is the nation's only state-based advocacy group dedicated to reforming state wildlife policy. We seek to transform Washington's relationship with its fish and wildlife from an approach centered around consumptive use to a more democratic paradigm that values science, recognizes the intrinsic value of individual animals, and prioritizes protecting, preserving and perpetuating wild lives.

To leverage the power of the law, informed advocacy and strategic partnerships to reform washingtons management of its fish and wildlife, to protect and preserve the states fish, wildlife and wild spaces.

In 2022, washington wildlife first (ww1) was governed by an independent board of directors. Ww1 had two paid employees: an executive director hired in 2021 and a communications director hired in 2022. The compensation for these two salaried employees was established by the board as a whole, not a subset of directors such as a compensation committee. None of the members of the board of directors had a conflict of interest for the two employees: none participated in or economically benefitted from the compensation arrangement for either employee. Neither employee a family member of any director. None was in an employment relationship subject to the director or control of anyone participating or economically benefitting from the compensation arrangement for either employee none received compensation or other payments subject to approval by anyone participating in or economically benefiting from the compensation arrangement for either employee. None had a material financial interest affected by the compensation arrangement for either employee. Neither employee approved a transaction providing economic benefits to anyone on the board of directors. Members of the board did a survey of similarly situated employees at comparable organizations to establish a salary range for both positions. The data showed that this salary range was at the conservative end of compensation arrangements for both employees. Contemporaneous documentation and recordkeeping was made of the compensation arrangements both in the hiring documents and the board minutes authorizing hiring of both employees.

WE ALSO CAMPAIGNED SUCCESSFULLY AGAINST MULTIPLE EFFORTS TO WEAKEN PROTECTIONS FOR WASHINGTONS GRAY WOLVES, INCLUDING A PROPOSAL TO REMOVAL ALL PROTECTIONS FROM MOST OF THE STATE WOLF POPULATION AND ANOTHER TO DOWNLIST WOLVES FROM ENDANGERED TO SENSITIVE ON THE STATE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST.

WE ALSO SPEARHEADED A RULEMAKING PETITION TO STOP THE STATE FROM CONTINUING TO SHOOT STATE ENDANGERED GRAY WOLVES AS A RESULT OF CONFLICTS WITH CATTLE THAT ROAM UNPROTECTED IN NATIONAL FORESTS. IN ADDITION, WE FILED LITIGATION TO CHALLENGE THE DEPARTMENTS VIOLATION OF THE STATE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ACT WHEN IT BEGAN TO DRAMATICALLY INCREASE STATE HATCHERY PRODUCTION WITHOUT ANY ANALYSIS OF THE POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT, EVEN THOUGH ITS OWN SCIENTISTS HAD SAID THE EXPANSION WAS LIKELY TO JEOPARDIZE WILD SALMON.

WE HELPED TRANSFORM THE NINE-MEMBER STATE COMMISSION THAT CONTROLS ALL STATE WILDLIFE POLICY FROM A GROUP DOMINATED BY HUNTING, FISHING, AND COMMERCIAL INTERESTS TO ONE PRIMARILY COMPOSED OF SCIENTISTS, LAWYERS, AND OTHER EXPERTS WHOSE FIRST PRIORITY IS CONSERVATION. WE FORMED AND NOW LEAD A POWERFUL COALITION OF MORE THAN 60 LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL FISH AND WILDLIFE ADVOCACY GROUPS THAT HAVE JOINED OUR CALL FOR STATE WILDLIFE AGENCY REFORMTHE FIRST COALITION OF ITS KIND IN ANY STATE. THANKS TO THIS COALITION, WE OBTAINED PASSAGE OF LANDMARK LEGISLATION PROVIDING FUNDING FOR A YEAR-LONG INDEPENDENT STUDY INTO THE REFORMS THAT MUST BE MADE TO THE WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE SO IT CAN FULFILL ITS RESPONSIBILITIES AS A PUBLIC TRUSTEE AND EFFECTIVELY PROTECT OUR WILDLIFE FROM THE THREATS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, HABITAT LOSS, AND A GLOBAL DECLINE IN BIODIVERSITY.
