Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Local and international service program for utah's youth. Students become relied upon volunteers in their own communities, attend monthly planning meetings where they are mentored to take leadership roles at the international service site, and spend two weeks of their summer vacation serving in small impoverished villages in a number of developing countries. In return for these commitments, youthlinc students earn a sponsorship that pays a portion of their international service trip costs. In 2018, the service year included 429 participants, including satellite teams in utah county and southern utah. An additional site was opened in fiji, so now the service year did international service in 8 countries.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Young humanitarian award program. The program recognizes utah residents who are high school or undergraduate college students who excel in their efforts to give back to their communities. The overall winner of the award receives a monetary award to be used for tuition for either undergraduate or graduate studies at the college or university of the student's choice. We are indebted to the george s. And dolores dor eccles foundation, robert d. Kent jr. Trust, and shaun and annette michel for making this award possible. Yha at-a-glance: 510 - hours spent reviewing applications 125 - number of applications 5 - 500 honorable mentions 3 - 1,000 finalists 1 - 3,000 runner-up 1 - 5,000 utah young humanitarian

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Real life. Allows youthlinc students the opportunity to mentor and tutor refugee teens. The real life curriculum focuses on life skills (such as health, hygiene, career development, financial literacy) and cultural exchange through friendships formed through sport, the arts, and social activities. Real life provided programming at 12 sites in the community. Our donor portfolio has also diversified, a result of the hard work of the program director, making real life more financially stable as we move into the future. Real life serves approximately 400 teens and puts to work 120+ volunteers.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Local service directory: the youthlinc utah online local service directory provides a selective list of organizations and agencies that offer hands-on volunteer opportunities to youth in a positive mentoring atmosphere. These sites have been recommended by youthlinc service year participants. Anyone in the state can use this directory to search for sites by type of service and areas of utah, log and verify volunteer service. The local service directory has expanded its scope and abilities. The directory is now able to be used by organizations/schools outside of youthlinc to log and track hours. Global community leadership: this program is similar to the service year, but is at a "collegiate" level. They engage in coursework approved by utah state university to ask students to critically evaluate their local and international humanitarian work. It also exposes students to strategies to become more involved in advocacy to affect systematic change. This past summer one team went to cambodia along with a completing a course with usu about global health; and a team went to vietnam and completed a course with usu about war relations between the usa and vietnam. Any tuition students pay to usu for their transcript credit is then passed on to youthlinc to help cover trip costs, making the credit a possibility at no additional cost.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The organization is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c) (3) of the internal revenue code and therefore has made no provision for federal income taxes in the accompanying financial statements. In addition, the organization has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a "private foundation" within the meaning of section 509 (a) of the internal revenue code. There was no unrelated business income for the year ended august 31, 2018. The organization's form 990, return of organization exempt from income tax, for the years ending august 31, 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015 are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they were filed. Generally accepted accounting principles require tax effects from an uncertain tax position to be recognized in the financial statements only if the position is more likely than not to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. If an uncertain tax position meets the more-likely-than not threshold, the largest amount of tax benefit that is greater than 50% likely to be recognized upon ultimate settlement with the taxing authority is recorded. The organization's primary tax positions relate to its status as a not-for- profit entity exempt from income taxes and classifications of activities related to its exempt purpose. Management has evaluated the tax positions reflected in the organization's tax filings and does not believe that any material uncertain tax positions exist.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAXES UNDER SECTION 501(C) (3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE AND THEREFORE HAS MADE NO PROVISION FOR FEDERAL INCOME TAXES IN THE ACCOMPANYING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
