IRS990/Description0ARTS-KIDS IS A 8-10-WEEK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM BASED IN SUMMIT COUNTY USING THE EXPRESSIVE ARTS AND GROUP TECHNIQUES TO SERVE STUDENTS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 8 AND 17 YEARS OLD. ARTS-KIDS REACHES OUT TO CHILDREN WHO ARE TRYING TO DEAL WITH ECONOMIC, SOCIAL OR EMOTIONAL PRESSURES, ALTHOUGH THE PROGRAM BENEFITS ANY STUDENT WHO WISHES TO PARTICIPATE. GRANTS AND PRIVATE DONATIONS MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO OFFER THE PROGRAM FREE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS REGARDLESS OF A FAMILY'S ABILITY TO PAY. THE PROGRAM IS A MODEL THAT CAN BE REPLICATED IN MANY DIFFERENT SETTINGS AND ADAPTED TO INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. A DESCRIPTION IS AS FOLLOWS: A TRAINED FACILITATOR LEADS EACH GROUP OF 18 CHILDREN WITH THE HELP OF 4-5 TRAINED VOLUNTEERS OF HIGH SCHOOL AGE OR ADULTS, PROVIDING A RATIO OF 1:3 ADULTS TO CHILDREN. EACH GROUP BEGINS AND ENDS WITH A TALKING CIRCLE, USING A "TALKING STICK" DECORATED BY MEMBERS OF THE CURRENT GROUP. EACH CHILD AND ADULT STATES A "HIGH" AND A "LOW FOR THE WEEK AND AN INTENTION FOR THE 2.5 HOUR SESSION IN THE OPENING CIRCLE. PRACTICING PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS, COMFORTABLE AND SKILLED WITH CHILDREN, ARE CONTRACTED TO PROVIDE EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITIES IN EACH OF THEIR PARTICULAR ART FORM. TRAINING IS PROVIDED FOR LOCATIONS WANTING TO REPLICATE THE PROGRAM, AND A FORMAL TRAINING PROGRAM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED IN FALL 2009-JANUARY 2011 ARTS-KIDS CONTRACTED TO TRAIN MEMBERS OF THE NORTHERN UTE TRIBE TO FACILITATE THE MODEL AND SET UP A NETWORK IN MAJOR CENTERS ON THE UINTAH AND OURAY RESERVATION. BEFORE THE NETWORK WAS IN PLACE, THE TRIBE CANCELLED THE CONTRACT AND STATED THEY WANTED TO DO THEIR OWN PROGRAM. SINCE THEN, PERIODIC CAMPS OR SIX-WEEK SESSIONS ARE IMPLEMENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UTAH EPISCOPAL CHURCH AT TWO LOCATIONS WHERE THERE ARE CHURCH MISSIONS. ARTS-KIDS IS EXPANDING TO WASATCH COUNTY WITH A PILOT OF TWO GROUPS OF 18 CHILDREN EACH IN TWO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS BEGINNING FALL 2011.

TRAINING IS PROVIDED FOR LOCATIONS WANTING TO REPLICATE THE PROGRAM, AND A FORMAL TRAINING PROGRAM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED IN FALL 2009-JANUARY 2011 ARTS-KIDS CONTRACTED TO TRAIN MEMBERS OF THE NORTHERN UTE TRIBE TO FACILITATE THE MODEL AND SET UP A NETWORK IN MAJOR CENTERS ON THE UINTAH AND OURAY RESERVATION. BEFORE THE NETWORK WAS IN PLACE, THE TRIBE CANCELLED THE CONTRACT AND STATED THEY WANTED TO DO THEIR OWN PROGRAM. SINCE THEN, PERIODIC CAMPS OR SIX-WEEK SESSIONS ARE IMPLEMENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UTAH EPISCOPAL CHURCH AT TWO LOCATIONS WHERE THERE ARE CHURCH MISSIONS. ARTS-KIDS IS EXPANDING TO WASATCH COUNTY WITH A PILOT OF TWO GROUPS OF 18 CHILDREN EACH IN TWO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS BEGINNING FALL 2011.
