“Utah down syndrome foundation provides hope to individuals with down syndrome, their families, and communities through support, education, activities, outreach and advocacy.”
“During 2019, the organization's accomplished its mission in the following ways: support: udsf designed and implemented a new website that directs members of its community to resources for individuals with down syndrome and their families as they navigate down syndrome. Udsf's private facebook group offers a safe place for its 1600 members to ask questions, share experiences, and help support one another as they raise a child with down syndrome. Education: this year, udsf started its new program called kindergarten kickoff. This program provided over 56 parents with knowledge, strategies, and support to help them build a strong foundation for their child with down syndrome as they begin kindergarten. Professional educators also took this class and received continuing education credits. In addition, udsf had 207 people attend its quarterly new parent breakfasts that provided education and support to new and expectant parents of a child with down syndrome. Udsf mailed out peer presentation tool kits to parents and educators that helped to educate over 155 elementary school-aged students on tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with down syndrome. Activities: udsf held 42 community outreach activities for individuals with down syndrome and their families across the state; over 3400 people attended these events. Outreach: udsf's new parent outreach volunteers hand-delivered over 50 new parent care packages to expectant/new parents who have received a down syndrome diagnosis for their child. Udsf's adults with down syndrome monthly activities, provided outreach, connection, and friendship to an average of 17 adults with down syndrome each month in salt lake county alone. This was a pilot program, which udsf hopes to provide to other counties across the state for adults with down syndrome. Each month, udsf sent out an average of 1550 electronic newsletters called the lowdown to its members. Udsf sent out over 900 birthday cards to individuals with down syndrome across the state. Advocacy: udsf directly supported five different research projects about down syndrome that were sponsored by academic and professional institutions. Udsf consulted for the utah department of health about which resources and information the dept of health should include on its website about down syndrome, to be compliant with utah's new hb-166.”
