“Recent snap and child nutrition activities state legislature 2022: - advocated for the codification of the state nutrition action council into the food security council, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to improve access to food across the state. - advocated for 500,000 in new funding for community food pantries, ultimately not funded. Administrative advocacy: - met with policy staff to design a plan on how utah would allocate the tanf pandemic emergency assistance fund (peaf). This resulted in a one-time payment to tanf and snap eligible households. - worked with dws to spend administrative funding to redesign the online snap application - wrote a letter to the governor's office to continue snap emergency allotments, utah continues to issue these benefits. - started a community food pantry association consisting of pantries funded with state money. Snap advocacy: - submitted snap policy recommendation the governor's initiative one utah health collaborative. This collaborative has the goal of improving the health and general well-being of all utahns. Increasing access to food will improve health outcomes. - translated snap outreach materials into 7 additional languages beyond spanish and english. College student food access and food insecurity - worked with utah higher education basic needs coalition to develop and implement a college student food security survey on all utah higher education institutions. - worked with utah system of higher education (ushe) and the united way of salt lake to set up a workgroup for campus pantries and basic needs centers. The group will be managed by ushe and the utah conservation corp. - worked with ushe to identify opportunities for collaboration on state/federal policy that impact the basic needs of college students. Child nutrition: - participated in planning meetings with utah's snap and child nutrition agencies on utah's state p-ebt plan. - worked with statewide coalitions to sketch out potential paths to statewide universal meals - outreach at the school board level focused on the overlap of nutrition programs and social and emotional learning. Community outreach/education: - hosted 4 community forums highlighting food insecurity in various communities that otherwise go unheard, and published 4 issue briefs to accompany the community forum topics - hosted 7 stakeholder meetings throughout the state. - facilitated the initial conversations about food choice in food pantries, including; culturally relevant/appropriate food for refugee and immigrant families. Other: - advocated for the submission and implementation of the senior farmers market nutrition assistance program.”
