Mission

Creating political and public will to end hunger in utah.

Our mission is to increase access to food across utah through advocacy, outreach, and education. Utahns against hunger is utahs only state-wide anti-hunger non-profit organization working on public policy and advocacy for federal nutrition programs.

Our mission is to increase access to food across utah through advocacy, outreach, and education. Utahns against hunger is utahs only state-wide anti-hunger non-profit organization working on public policy and advocacy for federal nutrition programs.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Recent snap and child nutrition activities state legislature 2020: worked to successfully pass school breakfast legislation; h.b. 222 start smart utah breakfast program, this legislation requires public schools that participate in the national school lunch program to also offer breakfast and to use alternative breakfast models if a certain number of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Tracking the implementation of this new policy has been difficult because of the disruption that has been caused by the pandemic. Worked in coalition with other stakeholders to over-turn tax reform legislation that would have more than doubled the sales tax on groceries. Covid 19 related work: updated our resource page for the community at the county level, providing information about food access programs and sites. This page has been shared across multiple platforms with several governmental and non-governmental organizations sharing our content. Advocated for the implementation of snap waivers made available through the cares act; including the snap emergency allotments, and pandemic ebt (p- ebt). Implemented a successful outreach campaign for p-ebt. We worked with community partners to translate information into 11 languages. More than 111,000 children received p-ebt for a total of 34,258,000 in benefits issued. Hosted six town hall meetings with utah's federal delegation to seek support for pandemic relief efforts. Participating in planning meetings with utah's snap and child nutrition agencies on utah's state p-ebt plan. Administrative advocacy: persuaded utah's snap administrators to update the residency requirements for snap. The previous definition made it difficult for veterans, in state for extended medical treatment at the va hospital, to qualify for benefits. Worked with utah's snap agency to submit a waiver for online snap purchases. Community outreach: with a focus on community organizations serving marginalized and underserved communities held 45 meetings with potential snap outreach partners, and conducted 28 snap outreach trainings. In the process of finalizing snap outreach grants to 10 organizations primarily serving black, indigenous and communities of color. Uah staff met with state wic administrators to discuss how we can increase our wic outreach efforts and how we can most effectively promote ewic. Facilitated the initial conversations about food choice in food pantries, including; culturally relevant/appropriate food for refugee and immigrant families.

TRACKING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS NEW POLICY HAS BEEN DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF THE DISRUPTION THAT HAS BEEN CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC. WORKED IN COALITION WITH OTHER STAKEHOLDERS TO OVER-TURN TAX REFORM LEGISLATION THAT WOULD HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED THE SALES TAX ON GROCERIES. COVID 19 RELATED WORK: UPDATED OUR RESOURCE PAGE FOR THE COMMUNITY AT THE COUNTY LEVEL, PROVIDING INFORMATION ABOUT FOOD ACCESS PROGRAMS AND SITES. THIS PAGE HAS BEEN SHARED ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS WITH SEVERAL GOVERNMENTAL AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS SHARING OUR CONTENT. MORE THAN 111,000 CHILDREN RECEIVED P-EBT FOR A TOTAL OF 34,258,000 IN BENEFITS ISSUED. HOSTED SIX TOWN HALL MEETINGS WITH UTAH'S FEDERAL DELEGATION TO SEEK SUPPORT FOR PANDEMIC RELIEF EFFORTS. PARTICIPATING IN PLANNING MEETINGS WITH UTAH'S SNAP AND CHILD NUTRITION AGENCIES ON UTAH'S STATE P-EBT PLAN. ADMINISTRATIVE ADVOCACY: PERSUADED UTAH'S SNAP ADMINISTRATORS TO UPDATE THE RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR SNAP.
