“Line 28:We matched up 24 youth with mentors this year. All but two made it to the end of the year commitment. Twelve of our matches qualify for Alumni status.We reach out to the community of Pima County to recruit mentors for the thirty five kids we have on our waiting list at any given time. Our hope is that the top quality mentors we recruit will have a desire to make a difference in a child's life in all areas of life including the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Over 90% of our mentors continue with their mentee long after the first year commitment. The mentors of 2013 and the Alumni counterparts compiled a total of 4,680 volunteer hours with their mentees, helping them with such things as; dealing with their negative self-image, helping them with school work and working closely with their teacher(s), counselors, and parents. They also counsel them on serious issues such as substance abuse, dealing with divorce, issues of bullying, and much more.Monthly Big Events are provided for the mentors, mentees, and those on the waiting list which we call the Esperanza Club (waiting list in Spanish). The purpose of the events are to provide support for the mentors, give mentees an opportunity to experience places and activities that they may have never experienced due to their low socio-economic status. Mentors also receive support and encouragement from other mentors. Mentoring is a huge commitment and the children who are in the program are there due to their need for support and good role models. The mentors can often get discouraged and the camaraderie they receive during the outing becomes a means of renewing their determination to make a difference in a child's life.Special activities that have taken place his year:1)One of our families, in which all four boys have mentors, had their home infested with bed bugs and lost all their furniture. One of their mentors, who had moved on and had become the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, sent $1,000 to help buy new beds, frames, dressers, tables and chairs, etc. A local men's group in a church put up another $1,500 in cash and donated furniture and more. 2)Some of our major events this past year were: Mentor Day at the U of AZ football game, Patagonia Lake Fishing trip in which every mentor/mentee had a boat all to themselves with a professional Bass fisherman, Hiking and riding the chairlift on Mt. Lemmon, Christmas, Bowling, and Halloween parties, Easter baskets for the elderly as a community service event, and more.3)Presented out program to over 35 churches, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist, and Lions clubs, all the major Chambers of Commerce including the Hispanic, Black, Northern Pima County, Marana, Vail, and Green Valley clubs. 4)Established our first satellite office in the town of Marana.5)We have continued to work with students of the Sr. and Jr. classes of a local high school in very low income area of Pima County. This past year we had twelve high school students start out as mentors for kids in a nearby elementary school. Their goal is to be a quality role model to these young impressionable kids and pour into them love, friendship, role-modeling, and expertise in educational matters. This has not only benefited the elementary school children, but has developed leadership, commitment and social awareness for the high school students.”
