Education Finance. VIP organized sessions to teach the downward trend in state education spending, providing parents and teachers with a historical context for the current budget reductions, and taught the proposal to draw on the State Land Trust fund to compensate for disinvestment. Leaders learned to negotiate converse effectively with school superintendents, governing board members, and legislators, as well as to develop local strategies to engage their own communities around bond and override issues. Civic Academies. VIP leaders conducted civic academies in member institutions, teaching about the states broken budget and economy and its impacts on education, health care, immigration, workforce training, and reform of the states incarceration system. These included public officials as guests. Over 2,500 institutional leaders attended. Immigration. VIP continued to conduct academies around the issue of immigration reform and the local impact on our youth and families, enabling leaders to engage local law enforcement and legislative officials. VIP Leaders held sessions within congregations to outline the options for Deferred action. Workforce training/Arizona Career Pathways. VIP member institutions held sessions to explain workforce and training issues to families in need of sustainable, family wage jobs. These sessions explored the changing labor market and the need to attain two-year associate degrees and certificates, for mid-range jobs that pay well, with a career path and benefits. These sessions have enabled VIP leaders to meet with business leaders, city officials, and the Maricopa Community College District to expand workforce opportunities for low-income families to enter into effective workforce training.
