“Grow jackson works with twenty-five classrooms of students ranging from preschool all the way to high schoolers across ten different schools in three districts in jackson county, northwest, jackson catholic schools, and jackson public schools. This program predominantly works with students in elementary classrooms and serves over eight hundred students a year. We follow a curriculum using agricultural techniques and skills to teach students concepts from the next generation science standard requirements set forth by the state of michigan. Students learn about food webs, soil ecology, plant anatomy, ecosystem interactions, the water cycle, and many other topics. All the science content is then connected with students lived experiences and real world understanding of their local food system. We combine food, community health, and nutrition, with life skills, dirty hands, and lived experience. Then the students get to try the foods in their classroom and take the foods home or see them show up on their plates in the school cafeteria. Grow jackson also provides education services for seniors in the community.”
“Grow jackson operates a network of community gardens of various sizes in and around the city of jackson. These gardens serve as engagement spaces with over two dozen nonprofit partners and schools. These partners include the jackson ymca, jackson catholic schools, jackson public schools, rise above, vista grande villa, the city of jackson, and many more. Grow jackson manages the gardens, grows food in the space, and operates classes and engagement days in the gardens to work with the various populations served by the partner organizations. These populations are a wide range of people. At-risk students, food insecure youth, long term rehab patients, a variety of mental health patients, seniors, and a large population of summer programming participants are all served in these gardens. Food grown in these gardens is also distributed to benefit people of the local community through self-serve farmstands for people to take what they need.”
