“Our mission at roots & wings charitable foundation is to offer support to integrative & wellness programs that increase emotional, physical & spiritual well-being during the continuous oncology treatment for metastatic breast cancer (mbc).”
“Roots & wings supported the metastatic breast cancer (mbc) community with 100 complimentary acupuncture & oncology massage appointments at rush cancer center in chicago, il. The program was called "we see you. We honor you." it commenced on october 1, 2020 in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The complimentary appointments will be available at rush until they have been completed. 50% of our appointments were delayed due to covid at the end of 2020 and resumed in 2021. Roots & wings created postcard-sized invitations for oncologists to "invite" rush mbc patients to participate in the complimentary appointments. In october 2021, rush created a video series presenting the evidence-based benefits of exercise and yoga in cancer thanks to roots & wings' financial support. The goal of the 15 videos is to help patients improve their quality of life throughout their cancer journey. Using educational and interactive techniques, patients can be met where they are and when they need the support. Videos will range in length from 10 minutes (informative) to 45 minutes (example classes) and cover several topics: lymphedema, fatigue, stress management, movement & strength. The video series will also include exercise courses such as strength training and yoga. Othe video series can be accessed through rush.edu, social media, and youtube. The media production will be conducted in collaboration with free spirit media, a local organization that trains teens and young adults from chicago's west and south sides in media production. Its mission is to transform media and society by providing opportunities for emerging creators, primarily from communities of color, to produce and distribute original content and pursue artistic, personal, and professional aspirations. Roots & wings has provided funding for the dana-farber cancer institute to create an integrative therapy program specifically geared to mbc patients that includes (1) live-streamed group meditation/mindfulness and nutrition classes and (2) on-demand programming in yoga, exercise, nutrition and creative arts therapy. The sessions are holistic therapies that work to reduce the pain, stress, and anxiety caused by mbc. The sessions aim to offer mbc patients comprehensive care that is both accessible and transformative. Roots & wings supported the metastatic breast cancer (mbc) community with funding to enhance behavioral health offerings available through the duke cancer patient support program. A medical family therapist is a facilitator to provide support to mbc patients and their families through individual and family group therapy and counseling, and peer groups that provide a space to share with others facing similar experiences. Their needs were not being met in the existing group before 2021. The metastatic breast cancer support group started virtually in march 2021 and is now available virtually and in person.”
“Roots & wings supported wildfire, a publication for the young metastatic breast cancer (mbc) community, as underwriters in 2021. Wildfire is a magazine specifically designed for young breast cancer survivors and fighters. Every contributor to the magazine is diagnosed under the age of 45 - a growing population that is decades younger than the average breast cancer fighter with very few age-appropriate resources available. The roots & wings logo, mission statement and website were printed in the magazine that reaches over 17,000 readers.”
