Our mission is to take all the stray cats and kittens off the streets of St. Johns County, Florida, provide them with proper veterinary care, and adopt them out to loving, forever homes. The cats that are not adopted will live in our specialized cat sanctuary where they receive food, water, ongoing veterinary care, and love.

|---|---|---|
| Our first & biggest program service accomplishment is our cat intake & adoption program. Our intake & adoption program is the most expensive program we operate, but it is also the most beneficial. In 2022, we took in 142 cats & kittens and adopted out 91 cats & kittens. In taking these cats off the streets of St. Johns County, we prevented hundreds of kittens from being born and adding to the overpopulation problem in our area. All of the animals we take in, with few exceptions, are stray cats or kittens who have received no medical care and are often undernourished, sick, or injured. In order for them to become available for adoption, all new intakes must undergo, at minimum, spay/neuter surgery, rabies & FVRCP vaccination, feline disease testing, microchipping, and treatment for fleas and worms. Given the background of the cats we take in, there are often medical needs beyond routine care, including diagnostics and treatment for injuries and illnesses of various severities. In 2022, we took in one cat with an old injury to his foot that required sedated radiographs to diagnose, costing us about $600. We also took in a litter of 4 kittens who were lethargic & feverish and required emergency fluids and diagnostic bloodwork. While the veterinarian was never able to give us a concrete diagnosis for these kittens, their multiple rounds of bloodwork and treatment cost about $2,000. While veterinary care and supplies are by far the most expensive part of the intake & adoption program, there are some other components as well. All of the cats we take in must be provided with food, water, clean litter boxes, bedding, and toys while they undergo quarantine and medical treatment. Some cats are only with us for a few weeks before adoption, and others are here for months before finding a home, so these expenses really add up over the long term. We also need cleaning supplies to ensure that diseases are not transmitted and cats remain healthy, and, of course, this program would not be possible without our shelter building, which is rented. | $0 | $22,515 |
| Our second program service accomplishment is the operation of our sanctuary. Despite our best efforts, sometimes a cat or kitten just doesn't find a home, or they are feral and cannot be returned to their colony. In these cases, the cat ends up in our sanctuary, which is a large room in our shelter, where they can roam around, interact with other cats, spend time with our volunteers, and wait to meet their forever family. We average about 50 cats in our sanctuary at any time, and they have a lot of needs. The greatest need is, of course, food, water, and clean litter boxes, as well as cat trees, beds, blankets, scratchers, and toys. To make sure everyone gets a chance to eat, we use automatic pet feeders in the sanctuary; food comes out multiple times a day at various times. We also use large water fountains to keep the water clean and to encourage drinking. The cats in the sanctuary also need ongoing veterinary care. Some of these cats have been with us for years, so their vaccines need to be updated on a regular basis. In addition, with up to 50 cats in one room at once, we have to stay on top of parasite and flea prevention, either through flea collars, oral medication, or topical medication. Since the cats can roam freely in the sanctuary, they are also free to make messes, making cleaning supplies a necessary investment for the health and well-being of the cats. Without our shelter building, the sanctuary would not be possible, and the cats that call it home would be homeless or worse. | $0 | $19,990 |
| Our third program service accomplishment is our community assistance program, which is new in 2022. Over the last 3 years, it has become quite obvious to us that our area is severely lacking in programs to help the general public deal with issues regarding cats. While many people have the desire to help when they see stray or feral cats, they don't know where to start, so they don't do anything. We started out small with this project, with the goal to expand to help more people and cats, particularly ferals. In 2022, we helped one woman who was feeding a colony of roughly 10 cats in her neighborhood. She is an older woman, with no experience in trapping cats, who wanted to do the right thing and get her colony fixed. We worked with her to provide trapping services, including picking up the cats once they were trapped, taking them to the vet, and housing them during their recovery. 3 of the cats we trapped from her colony were fixed and returned, and 5 were fixed and stayed with us. 2 of these were adopted together shortly after, while the other 3 still reside in our sanctuary. Without our help, these cats would still be unaltered, having multiple litters of kittens a year, and their caretaker would be completely overwhelmed. The other community assistance project we took on in 2022 was a hoarding case. A man reached out to us in a panic after his ex-wife passed away. Prior to her death, she had been rescuing cats and housing them in the home they owned together. These cats were not spayed or neutered, so they had been reproducing in droves for an unknown amount of time. Upon first arriving at the house, we estimated there were at least 80 cats of all ages in the home, and they were all anti-social and aggressive. Since we are a small organization, we didn't have the space or resources to take in all 80 at once; we took in a total of 27 between October and the end of 2022 in two groups. Some of these were young kittens, but the others were adults who needed to be quarantined, vetted, and housed. By the end of 2022, we had taken 19 of these cats to the vet for their routine care and 15 of them were transferred to another organization for socialization, while the others remain with us. Without our help, the cats in this hoarding situation would likely have all been euthanized due to their behavior. | $0 | $3,035 |
