| Our first program service accomplishment, and biggest expense, is the operation of our shelter and sanctuary. Our shelter building is rented, and we spent $16,956 on our rent and required building maintenance alone. We have two main operations that happen in this building. Firstly, we operate as a shelter, in that we take in stray and owner-surrendered cats that residents of St. Johns County bring to us, and we house them for a minimum of 30 days while they receive their vaccinations, spay/neuter, and other veterinary care. Once these cats are fully vetted, they move to one of our two Petco partner locations, where we continue to pay for their food, litter, and toys until they are adopted. Last year we adopted out 155 cats, but we took in about 180 cats, in addition to multiple pregnant cats we took in that had kittens in our shelter. Some of the cats who were not adopted out were feral and returned to their colony or became permanent residents in our sanctuary. Each of these cats had to be fed, provided a litter box, and given enrichment items for at least 30 days, but often longer than that. In addition to our shelter, we also operate a sanctuary. On average, we have about 30 permanent residents in our sanctuary. These cats are feral, semi-feral, have behavioral issues, are seniors, have been adopted and returned, or have just been overlooked by adopters. Most of these cats have been with us for over 6 months and have to be fed, provided with clean litter, and given toys, scratchers, and other enrichment items to keep them entertained. We also had to purchase cleaning supplies to keep the sanctuary in good condition. In total, we spent about $17,500 on supplies for both the shelter and the sanctuary. | $0 | $37,617 |
| Our second program service accomplishment, and second biggest expense, is providing veterinary care to all cats and kittens that enter our care. In 2021, we adopted out 155 cats, and each of those cats was a new intake that had to, at minimum, be spayed or neutered, vaccinated for FVRCP and rabies, tested for the feline diseases FIV and Feline Leukemia, dewormed, microchipped, and treated for fleas. The average cost for one cat to be fully vetted, if they have no additional health issues, is $110. In addition, we had multiple cats with serious medical conditions that we treated. One cat had to have their front leg amputated due to it getting caught in a trap before coming to us; this cat's pre-operative care, surgery, and post-operative care cost $3,500. Another cat had been adopted from us and was returned months later with a broken hind leg; she had to undergo surgery to repair the leg, which, combined with pre-operative care, cost $2,200. A four month old kitten came to us with hind-leg paralysis and persistent digestive issues; he underwent multiple veterinary visits, physical therapy appointments, and a visit with a specialist at the University of Florida. His medical care cost us $1500. 7 kittens from three different litters were diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a disease that has traditionally always been fatal. With the help of a new, very expensive medication that had to be administered for 84 straight days, we were able to cure all 7 of these kittens and find them forever homes. We spent $7,800 just on the medication for these cats; they also all had to have bloodwork done a minimum of 3 times during the treatment, which cost about $200 per round of bloodwork. Besides these significant medical cases, we had cats with less severe medical issues that required veterinary visits to resolve. These issues included persistent diarrhea, ear problems, neurological issues, anorexia, and pancreatitis. As the cats we take in are coming from the outdoors and almost always have no verifiable medical history, they all have to be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and tested for disease, and many of them end up having underlying health issues that must be treated before they can be adopted. | $0 | $30,887 |
| Our third program service accomplishment, and third biggest expense, is the renovation of our shelter building. This is a one-time expense specific to 2021. One of our goals for 2021 was to purchase our own building or plot of land to move the shelter to, but we were unfortunately not able to make that happen due to the high cost of land and buildings in our area. We decided instead to renovate our current building to better serve our needs. Firstly, we had to get a storage unit to move most of our large items, like carriers and crates, into while the building was being renovated. Then, we put up a plywood wall and covered two indoor windows to create a closed room that we could use for new intake quarantine; we also had to purchase a door for this room. We used a garage floor kit to recover the concrete floor and installed new rubber baseboards. As this room is most likely to have sick and/or unvetted cats in it, we bought a state-of-the-art air purifier, which also filters out viruses, to put in the Intake room. We spent $5,000 on 15 large veterinary-style pet cages that can hold up to 2 cats at a time, and 10 of those went into the newly created Intake room. We also had to purchase a large shelf to hold our clean laundry, as well as a stainless steel cart to hold our medical supplies and function as an examination table. After completing the Intake room, we moved on to what we call "overflow", where we house cats that do not need to be quarantined but cannot go to Petco, as well as a few permanent residents that cannot go into the main sanctuary room. In Overflow, we recovered the floor using a garage flooring kit and installed rubber baseboards. The additional 5 pet cages went into this room. Then, we moved all of the permanent resident cats into these two rooms and redid their sanctuary room. We recovered the floor with the garage flooring kit, installed rubber baseboards, repainted the walls, installed wooden shelves and crates on one wall to give the cats somewhere to perch, and outfitted the room with 4 new auto-feeding machines, 2 high-capacity water fountains, and 3 large litter boxes made out of plastic storage containers, all of which we bought new. We then improved our laundry room by recovering the floor with the same garage flooring kit as the other rooms and installing new rubber baseboards. We purchased a new apartment-style washing machine (as our building does not have the hookups for a traditional washer) and a small dryer. We also purchased an apartment-style dishwasher that sanitizes dishes to prevent the spread of disease; we also installed two large sinks. Finally, we recovered the floor in the hallway and installed rubber baseboards. Our main goal for this renovation was to create a fully-enclosed Intake room where new cats could be quarantined, and we accomplished that. We are now, in 2022, able to take in more cats and have had less illness transmission due to the renovation we completed in 2021. | $0 | $11,507 |

“Expenses include: veterinary care (spay/neuter, vaccination, testing for diseases) for newly-acquired cats and kittens, ongoing veterinary care for resident cats in our sanctuary, medical supplies (syringes, needles, microchips, wound spray, sterile bandages), medication (dewormer, flea medicine, prescriptions as needed), wet and dry cat food, cat litter, cat toys/scratchers/beds, litter boxes, reusable and disposable food & water bowls, cleaning supplies (bleach, dish soap, dishwasher pods, antibacterial spray, laundry detergent, brooms, paper towels, disinfecting wipes, etc.), office supplies (paper, writing utensils, staples, post-it notes, manila envelopes), sanitation items (hand sanitizer, disposable gloves, shoe covers), bank fees, international transaction fees, website domain & hosting fees, Wi-Fi fees, Facebook advertising fees, and state filing fees. We also renovated our shelter, which required the purchase of: 15 veterinary-style pet cages; 4 wheel bases for the pet cages; rental of a storage unit for items during renovation; auto-feeder machines for the sanctuary; large capacity water fountains for the sanctuary; general building supplies (plywood, nails, paint, rubber baseboards, garage floor covering kits); shelving units; an air purifier; and an apartment-style washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher. Finally, we purchased a Glowforge laser cutting machine, which will be used to create items to be sold to generate revenue in 2022 and beyond.”
