IRS990/Desc0COVID 19 Community Rapid ResponseIn June, responding to the urgent needs of our community, who were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, we utilized Liberation Park as a hub for Rapid Response initiatives. Activities that were allowed under the State of California and County of Alameda Stay At Home Order began at Liberation Park including drive-through meal distribution, PPE distribution, and COVID-19 related communication. 2020 was an unprecedented year and the Black Cultural Zone CDC and its Collaborative Partners stepped up to insure we were a part of the solution.- Over 10,000 vulnerable Oakland individuals and families receiving free meal kits- 150,000 hot meals distributed in the last half of 2020.- At least 20,000 Oakland residents received information, education and support on staying safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.- We also distributed thousands of COVID kits to businesses and the public.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Liberation ParkIn April, after several years of blight, the Black Cultural Zone CDC entered into a license agreement with the City of Oakland in 2020, to create its first Black Cultural Zone Hub site. We immediately activated the property to support a range of community-serving activities including rapid response efforts to address the global pandemic, which has hit the East Oakland community particularly hard (see below). Simultaneously, we launched an in-depth planning process with a wide range of stakeholders to create a sacred space-- an outdoor cultural, community, and commercial center that we call Liberation Park. In addition to the intense COVID 19 Community Rapid Response, BCZ has sponsored or hosted an outdoor Black mural exhibition, community rallies, outdoor dance events, and wellness activities including yoga, tai chi, and a walking group at Liberation Park. Liberation Park would become the site of the first Outdoor Certified Farmers Market later in 2020 -- the AKOMA Certified Outdoor Farmers Market. The Community has laid claim to Liberation Park and embraces it as a reclamation of the hope, possibility, and love that fueled our neighborhoods for generations, in spite of decades of disinvestment, disillusionment, and disappointment.
