Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Empowering people with practical solutions to overcoming obstacles on their path to recovery. We achieve this mission via our values system that offers support through relationships, is person-centered, engages individuals and families to strengthen our community, is holistic and based on respect, and produces hope. We have developed a network of resources to help restore or alleviate need in most situations.

Established in 2019, Next Steps (NS) is the only organization in The Colony with a mission to serve residents in immediate crisis. After working for another Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) homeless services organization that discontinued services in The Colony, NS founder Pamela De Santiago decided that the often-hidden needs of its residents in crisis could not go unmet. Prior to NS, most residents seeking help during a crisis went from church to church or organization to organization; there were no ongoing, consistent, comprehensive services available within the city limits. At that time, several administrative assistants from local churches were serving as informal case managers with no experience and very limited resources. Now, NS fills this gap in services by helping residents of The Colony overcome barriers on their way to financial stability and a successful life. NS provides this help through financial and employment coaching and food and housing support.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

At the height of the pandemic, NS was only six months old, but it shifted its services and funding to provide eviction prevention help for The Colony's residents. During this time, NS formed a collaboration with the United Way of Denton County, serving as the hub for the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding in this county. NS received and distributed funds to residents of The Colony requesting assistance with rent, utilities, and other pandemic-related needs. From March 23, 2020, to December 15, 2020, NS received 292 applications; 158 of these were unduplicated family households.

Not only is the city a financial supporter of NS, but together they regularly collaborate on issues that affect the city, such as the 2021 winter storms. During that time, NS enabled a partnership between the city and Horizons Church to open a warming station and weather shelter for residents who lost power. In the social media campaign, NS took the lead to secure donations and help coordinate running the shelter during that week.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0All grant funds are authorized by our Administrator, who verifies that the terms of the grantor's grant (predominantly the United Way) have been met. A significant amount of our grants to individuals in 2020 were given after documentation was provided to the United Way and (after their review) we received funding.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0At the height of the pandemic, NS was only six months old, but it shifted its services and funding to provide eviction prevention help for The Colony's residents.
