Mission

Orient Land Trust is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to the preservation of Valley View Hot Springs (VVHS) and its view shed, including natural and biologic resources, agricultural lands, wildlife habitat, open space, and historic and geologic features of the northern SAn LUis Valley, for the education and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The Executive Director, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Board review the Form 990 in detail after its initial preparation. After this review, all directors of the Board are given a copy and the oppertunity to comment prior to filing with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

Annually, all directors, officers, and employees of Orient Land Trust(OLT) are required to sign a document acknowledging OLT's policies governing conflict of interests. A disclosure statement is also updated annually by directors, officers, and employees. The conflict of interest policy describes monitoring and enforcement procedures for conflicts of interest.

The Executive Director determines the compensation for all employees of the organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 19: Other Organization Documents Publicly Available

The Orient Land Trust makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial reports available to the public upon request. Current financial reports, including the statement of financial position, the statement of activities, and the statement of cash flows, are included with a packet provided to the public at every Board meeting. The annual audit is also reviewed at a Board meeting.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, line 6

Volunteers are invaluable to the sustainability of Orient Land Trust's many programs. Specifically, volunteers provide services, such as camp host, discovery host, bat tours, invasive weed eradication, fence installation and maintenance, restoration of historic buildings, trail maintenance, hot springs reconstruction, camp and astronomy hosts as well as geology tour guides. In addition, board and committee members serve on a volunteer basis.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Board-designated: The purpose of the board-designated funds is to provide an endowment from which only net income and limited amounts of principal; will be made available to further the charitable purposes of Orient Land Trust in support of specific programs conducted by OLT. The board has also designated funds for long-term capital improvements and as an operating reserve.Temporarily Restricted: Temporarily restricted funds are held for donor-designated purposes and will be released from restriction upon satisfaction of the purpose.Permanently Restricted: Permanently restricted amounts include land and buildings donated to Orient Land Trust which must be held in perpetuity.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Orient Land Trust is exempt from federal income taxes on income substantially related to the Organization's exempt purpose under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Under Colorado state statues, any Organization receiving exemption from federal income taxes is also exempt from Colorado income taxes. The federal income tax returns prior to fiscal year 2014 are closed. Orient Land trust's policy for evaluating uncertain income tax positions is to only take income tax positions that are more likely than not to be sustained if the taxing authorities were to examine the positions. If applicable, Orient Land Trust classifies interest and penalties as interest expense.

Visitors enjoyed the many attributes of the property including hiking, soaking, viewing wildlife, geology, and bat conservation. Volunteer camp hosts assisted visitors, especially during the busy summer months. Orient Land Trust facilities are a wonderful model for hydroelectric off-grid electric power.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Natural Resources Conservation and Protection: The Orient Land Trust protects over 2,200 acres of land and is developing management plans to promote sustainability for all of its properties. It continues on-going projects to improve riparian areas, to protect indigenous species, and to eliminate invasive weeds. The reservoir at the ranch is home to a program protecting Rio Grande Chub and Rio Grande Sucker fish species. OLT's Everson Ranch engages in historic ranching operations with the goal of soil and water restoration. In addition, OLT collaborates with another land trust, working under a Memorandum of Understanding, efficiently providing conservation options to area landowners.

Visitors participated in Astronomy and Bat Tours daily throughout the summer and Geology, Hydroelectric, and Ranch Tours are offered weekly or upon request. Additional workshops in botany, weather, horsemanship, and a bird workshop made a positive impact to kids participating in our Summer Science Camp. Many guest took advantage of our educational programs in 2018.
