Activity 2

PUBLICATIONS: We published three professionally-designed books and two chapbooks of participants' unique and powerful writing. We printed and distributed more than 1,300 books: "Roundabout" (spring); "A Handful of Bright/Un puñado de brillo" (summer); "Volume Up, Volume Down/Volumen alto, volumen bajo" (fall); and "Have You Seen My Buffalo?" and "When the Leaves Come Out of Their Trees" (featuring writing by Parkrose elementary and middle school students). These publications were truly community endeavors, with more than 70 volunteers helping to produce each book/chapbook. Workshop participants each received a free copy of the book in which their writing was published. Books were also made available at local bookstores alongside literary journals and at public libraries, the county jail, a state prison and at schools. We also featured writers and their work on our website and through social media. Oregon's Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen wrote: "In the pages of [a] Write Around Portland anthology, you'll encounter a number of voices that -- without the efforts of this worthy organization -- might have not have been heard...Their stories -- told in poems and prose -- extend and deepen our understanding of the larger human story."

Activity 3

COMMUNITY READINGS: In 2012, we held 3 large and 11 smaller readings with a combined total of more than 1,100 audience members. Our large community readings were open to the public and were free of charge. These readings brought participants from all of our workshops together with each other and with the general public to share their work. These events promoted respect for diverse voices and provided the opportunity to share the stories of individuals experiencing isolation because of economic, cultural, physical, social or other barriers. The range of stories at each reading was vast. An unmistakable spirit of support, compassion, respect and enthusiasm for the writers and the written word permeated each reading. Our writers and audiences are among the most diverse in Portland. According to the Willamette Week, "If you haven't been to a Write Around Portland reading, you're missing out on one of the most engaging, amazing literary events in this city."
