Activity 2

PUBLISHED BOOKS: We published three professionally-designed books of workshop participants' unique and powerful writing. We printed and distributed more than 1,100 books: "Still the Days Grow Longer" (spring), "Moving or Still/En movimiento o quieto" (summer) and "Blueprint to My Backbone" (fall). These publications were truly community endeavors, with more than 70 volunteers helping to produce each book. Workshop participants each received a free copy of the book in which their work was published. Books were also available at local bookstores alongside literary journals and at public libraries, the county jail, a state prison and schools. We also featured writers and their work on our website and through social media. Oregon's Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen wrote: "In the pages of [a] Write Around Portland anthology, you'll encounter a number of voices that--without the efforts of this worthy organization--might not have been heard...Their stories--told in poems and prose--extend and deepen our understanding of the larger human story."

Activity 3

COMMUNITY READINGS: In 2011, we held three large community readings and eleven smaller readings with a combined total of more than 1,000 audience members. Everyone was welcome to attend, free of charge. These readings brought participants from all of our workshops together with each other and with the general public to share their work. The events promoted respect for diverse voices and provided and opportunity to share the stories of individuals who may have been isolated by economic, cultural, social or other barriers. The range of stories at each reading was vast. An unmistakable spirit of support, compassion, respect and enthusiasm for the written word permeated each reading. Our writers and audiences continue to be among the most diverse in Portland. The Willamette Week newspaper wrote: "If you haven't been to a Write Around Portland reading, you're missing out on one of the most engaging, amazing literary events in this city."
