Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The board of directors are responsible for selecting the audit firm and for reviewing the audited financial statements with the cpa.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from income tax as provided under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, except on net income derived from unrelated business activities. The organization adopted accounting requirements that prescribe when to recognize and how to measure the financial statement effects of income tax positions taken or expected to be taken on its income tax returns, including the position that the organization continues to qualify to be treated as a tax-exempt organization for both federal and state income tax purposes. These rules require management to evaluate the likelihood that, upon examination by relevant taxing jurisdictions, those income tax positions would be sustained. Based on that evaluation, if it were more than 50% probable that a material amount of income tax would be imposed at the entity level upon examination by the relevant taxing authorities, a liability would be recognized in the accompanying balance sheet along with any interest and penalties that would result from that assessment. If the organization has unrelated business income, the federal exempt organization business income tax returns (form 990t) would be subject to examination by the internal revenue service for three years after filing. Should any penalties and interest be incurred, they would be recognized as management and general expenses. Based on the results of management's evaluation, the requirements did not have a material effect on the organization's financial statements. Consequently, no liability is recognized in the accompanying statement of financial position for uncertain income tax positions. The organization's federal return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) for 2013, 2014 and 2015 are subject to examination by the internal revenue service generally for three years after they are filed.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0ORPHAN MINISTRIES PROVIDES CHRISTIAN HUMANITARIAN AID FOR FATHERLESS AND ORPHANED CHILDREN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD:VISION:OUR VISION IS TO PLACE ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN PERMANENT FAMILIES, IN THE CHILD'S BIRTH COUNTRY, AND WITH LOVING HOUSE-PARENTS WHO FACILITATE MAXIMUM HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT FOR EACH CHILD PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY, AND MENTALLY/ACADEMICALLY.MISSION:OUR MISSION IS TO REFLECT GOD'S HEART THROUGH THE LIFE LONG JOURNEY OF ADOPTION AND ORPHAN CARE.OUR ORPHAN CARE PROGRAM WAS LAUNCHED IN 2002.COUNTRIES:HOPE'S PROMISE HOSTS ORPHAN CARE MINISTRIES IN NEPAL, VIETNAM, KENYA AND ZIMBABWE. AS OF DECEMBER 2015, HOPE'S PROMISE'S PRIMARY ORPHAN CARE SERVICES ENCOMPASS A TOTAL OF 8 CHILDREN'S HOMES IN KENYA (24 CHILDREN, 2 HOMES), VIETNAM (19 CHILDREN, 4 HOMES) AND NEPAL (10 CHILDREN, 2 HOMES), PROVIDING HOMES FOR A TOTAL OF 53 ORPHANS.IN ADDITION, HOPE'S PROMISE SUPPORTS 104 CHILDREN BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN VIETNAM (90 CHILDREN), KENYA (3 CHILDREN) AND ZIMBABWE (11 CHILDREN).PROBLEM TO OVERCOME:THERE ARE AN ESTIMATED 153 MILLION ORPHANS WORLD-WIDE. (SOURCE: U.S. GOVERNMENT "5TH ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS ON PUBLIC LAW 109-95 AND AFFIRMED BY UNICEF). THESE CHILDREN ARE OFTEN RELEGATED TO INSTITUTIONAL ORPHANAGES, STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL ON THE STREETS, SUBSIST IN CHILD-HEADED HOUSEHOLDS, OR ARE ABUSED AND NEGLECTED IN THE HOMES OF SINGLE PARENTS OR EXTENDED RELATIVES. MANY ORPHANS EXPERIENCE SEVERE TRAUMA AT VERY YOUNG AND VULNERABLE AGES. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE BIOLOGICAL BRAIN STRUCTURE OF A CHILD WHO HAS EXPERIENCED TRAUMA IS FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT THAN THAT OF A CHILD WHO HAS NOT. AS A BABY EXPERIENCES STRESSFUL CIRCUMSTANCES, THE BODY PRODUCES A BIOLOGICAL CHEMICAL CALLED CORTISOL. IN IDEAL CIRCUMSTANCES, A PRIMARY CAREGIVER SOOTHES THE CHILD WHEN HE OR SHE IS UPSET. IF A BABY DOES NOT EXPERIENCE THIS HEALTHY ATTACHMENT, CORTISOL IS OVER-PRODUCED AND RE-SHAPES THE VERY STRUCTURE OF THE BRAIN. HOWEVER, BRAIN IMAGING TECHNOLOGY ALSO REVEALS THAT A YOUNG CHILD'S BRAIN HAS THE POTENTIAL TO RECOVER FROM THE EFFECTS OF EARLY TRAUMA IF HE OR SHE EXPERIENCES AT LEAST ONE SECURE, SUPPORTIVE ATTACHMENT. CHILDREN WHO ARE NEGLECTED OR PLACED IN INSTITUTIONAL ORPHANAGES WHERE CAREGIVERS ARE INCONSISTENT, CHANGE OFTEN, AND AT TIMES ARE EVEN ABUSIVE DO NOT RECEIVE THIS FUNDAMENTAL PATHWAY TO WHOLENESS.(INFORMATION ON CHILDREN'S BRAIN RESPONSE TO TRAUMA TAKEN FROM A RESEARCH REPORT CITED IN TRAUMA, BRAIN, AND RELATIONSHIP: HELPING CHILDREN HEAL, A DVD SPONSORED BY SANTA BARBARA GRADUATE INSTITUTE CENTER FOR CLINICAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH, PUBLISHED IN 2004.)SOLUTION:BASED ON THIS AND SIMILAR RESEARCH RESULTS, HOPE'S PROMISE (HP) IS CONVINCED THAT THE STRONGEST INTERVENTION IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE TRAUMA OF ORPHAN-HOOD AND/OR ABANDONMENT IS FOR THEM TO BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO FORM LIFE-GIVING, HEALING ATTACHMENTS WITH PRIMARY CAREGIVERS. HOPE'S PROMISE BELIEVES THAT EVERY CHILD NEEDS AND DESERVES TO BE RAISED IN A FAMILY. OUR MODEL FOR ORPHAN CARE, THEREFORE, PLACES ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN INTO THE CARE OF LOVING, INDIGENOUS HOUSE PARENTS WHO GUIDE THE CHILDREN'S PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, SPIRITUAL, AND MENTAL/ACADEMIC GROWTH. WITHIN THIS NURTURING ENVIRONMENT, THE CHILDREN ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO FLOURISH IN EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE.OBJECTIVES:HP BRINGS CHILDREN INTO OUR HOMES WITH NO OTHER VIABLE OPTION FOR A HEALTHY FAMILY LIFE DUE TO THE DEATH OR REJECTION OF ONE OR BOTH BIOLOGICAL PARENTS. HP HAS ESTABLISHED THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF THE CHILDREN WE SERVE THROUGH OUR ORPHAN HOMES: - DOUBLE ORPHANS (BOTH PARENTS ARE DECEASED OR MISSING)- SINGLE ORPHANS (ONE PARENT IS DECEASED OR MISSING) WHERE THE SINGLE PARENT IS DYING, HAS COMPLETELY REJECTED THE CHILD, OR IS NEGLECTING OR ABUSING THE CHILD- VULNERABLE CHILDREN - CHILDREN WHO ARE ABUSED OR NEGLECTED BY THEIR PRIMARY CAREGIVERS OR IN A DANGEROUS HOME SITUATION,

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM INCOME TAX AS PROVIDED UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE, EXCEPT ON NET INCOME DERIVED FROM UNRELATED BUSINESS ACTIVITIES.
