Mission

The aakoma project works to address the unmet mental health needs of intersectional youth and young adults of color (including lgbtq youth and those with disabilities). We envision a world where every child, teen, and young adult (inclusive of all points of diversity) feels the freedom to live unapologetically and authentically within an environment that allows them to rise and thrive.

The aakoma project works to build the consciousness of intersectional youth and young adults of color and their caregivers on the recognition and importance of mental health, empower youth and their families to seek help and manage mental health, and influence systems and services to receive and address the needs of youth and young adults of color and their families.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax effect is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for uncertain tax positions. Interest and penalties, if any, are accrued as a component of management and general expenses when assessed. The organization is a not-for-profit organization that is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and classified by the internal revenue service as other than a private foundation. Similar to other tax-exempt organizations, the aakoma project, inc. Is subject to tax on unrelated business income. Tax years prior to 2019 are no longer subject to examination by taxing authorities.

WE WORK TO ENSURE THAT RESEARCHERS, RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS, AND ASSOCIATIONS RECOGNIZE AND PRIORITIZE DATA AND STUDIES THAT FOCUS ON THE NEEDS OF THE WIDEST RANGE OF YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS POSSIBLE. IN 2022, WE MATCHED 170 YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR WITH A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER FOR TREATMENT NOTING THAT 131 PROVIDERS ARE PART OF AAKOMA'S FREE THERAPY NETWORK. THE AAKOMA PROJECT LAUNCHED A GROUNDBREAKING STUDY IN 2022 TO EXAMINE THE STATE OF MENTAL HEALTH AMONG YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS OF COLOR. OUR STUDY IDENTIFIED UNIQUE CHALLENGES FACED BY YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS OF COLOR IN THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND ACCESSING MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT. WE FURTHER PROPOSED SOLUTIONS TO ADDRESS THESE CHALLENGES. IN MAY 2022, THE MTV MENTAL HEALTH YOUTH ACTION FORUM, A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN MTV AND THE WHITE HOUSE, BROUGHT TOGETHER YOUTH LEADERS AND MENTAL HEALTH EXPERTS TO DISCUSS WAYS TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE, WITH A FOCUS ON REDUCING STIGMA AND INCREASING ACCESS TO RESOURCES AND SUPPORT. THE AAKOMA PROJECT WAS PROUD TO BE A MENTOR AND MEMBER OF THE CORE TEAM OF ORGANIZERS SUPPORTING MTV AND THE BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION IN THIS IMPORTANT INITIATIVE.
