The mission of singula institute is to promote mental health and wellness in the community through the development of a clinical and research institute to understand an individual's risk for mental illness and to tailor interventions based on the individual's unique combination of biological and clinical variables. Using single-subject research design, we use innovative computational methods, psychophysiological tests, and clinical assessments in order to integrate and extend upon existing methods of clinical care (specifically, medications and psychotherapy). We are building a data repository and collaborate with academic and non-academic partners to improve treatment alternatives.

| CLINIC AND CLINICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM:OVER THE LAST YEAR AND HALF THROUGH MANY VOLUNTEERED HOURS OF TIME, THE SINGULA START-UP AND CLINICAL RESEARCH TEAM HAS IDENTIFIED MAJOR GAPS IN THE MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH SPACE, AND DEVELOPED CLINICAL RESEARCH PROJECTS AND APPROACHES TO SOLVE THE OVERARCHING QUESTIONS:1. WHAT MAKES PSYCHOTHERAPY WORK OR NOT WORK FOR THE INDIVIDUAL?2. WHAT MAKES BIOLOGICAL TREATMENTS WORK OR NOT WORK FOR THE INDIVIDUAL?3. HOW CAN WE MAKE TREATMENT MORE EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL?WE HAVE WORKED TOGETHER TO TACKLE THESE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FROM LINGUISTICS, BEHAVIORAL, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL/BIOLOGICAL APPROACHES. WE HAVE CONTINUED TO WORK ON DEVELOPING OUR RESEARCH IDEAS IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMPUTER SCIENTISTS AND COMPUTATIONAL PSYCHOLOGISTS TO REFINE OUR RESEARCH IDEAS.UNDER THE MENTORSHIP, DIRECTION, AND SUPERVISION FROM OUR CO-FOUNDERS AND FIVE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BIOENGINEERING STUDENTS, WE WORKED ON DEVELOPING A METHOD FOR USING ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY (EEG) IN A PAIRED MANNER TO SIMULATE A THERAPIST AND PATIENT INTERACTION FOR THEIR SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT. WE HAVE ALSO BEGUN TO BROADEN OUR NETWORK THROUGH THE ATTENDANCE OF CONFERENCES, SUCH AS SOCIETY OF BIOLOGICAL PSYCHIATRY AND ASPEN INSTITUTE.ON THE BUSINESS SIDE OF BUILDING OUR CLINIC, WE HAVE BEGUN TO REFINE OUR BUSINESS PLAN TO FIT SINGULA INSTITUTE'S VISION. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH OUR ADVISORS TO GUIDE US THROUGH THE PROCESS. WE ARE CONTINUING OUR WORK TO SELECT AN ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD (EHR) THAT WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH OUR CLINIC AND CLINICAL RESEARCH NEEDS. GIVEN THE VARIOUS LAYERS OF COMPLEXITY OF OUR CLINICAL RESEARCH OPERATION, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP TOWARDS IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR CLINIC AND CLINICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM. | $0 | $4,895 |
| SOCIAL IMPACT COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:IN ITS FIRST YEAR OF OPERATIONS (2019), SINGULA INSTITUTE HAS CREATED, PLANNED, ORGANIZED, AND EXECUTED SEVERAL FREE EDUCATIONAL EVENTS OPEN TO THE NEW YORK CITY COMMUNITY. WE HOSTED A THREE-PART DISCUSSION SERIES, ENTITLED "THE MANY FACES OF DEPRESSION" THAT WERE HELD EACH MONTH FOR THREE MONTHS AND BROUGHT IN 8-20 ADULTS PER SESSION. OUR FIRST DISCUSSION EVENT ON MARCH 14TH CENTERED AROUND HOW DEPRESSION IMPACTS THE INDIVIDUAL WHO SUFFERS FROM THE ILLNESS, OUR SECOND DISCUSSION EVENT ON APRIL 11TH FOCUSED ON HOW DEPRESSION IMPACTS THE LOVED ONES OF THE SUFFERER, AND OUR THIRD DISCUSSION EVENT ON MAY 9TH FOCUSED ON HOW DEPRESSION IMPACTS SOCIETY. EACH DISCUSSION ALLOWED FOR AN IMPORTANT EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION AND IDEAS BETWEEN PARTICIPANTS AND SINGULA INSTITUTE. IN JULY, OUR CO-FOUNDER, DR. ZHI-DE DENG VOLUNTEERED AT AN MIT STUDENT-RUN "GRAND HACK" EVENT (HTTPS://GRANDHACK.MIT.EDU) THAT BROUGHT IN 50 STUDENTS AND WAS HELD IN WASHINGTON, DC BY THE ORGANIZATION CALLED MIT HACKING MEDICINE. THIS GROUP'S MISSION IS "TO INFECT, ENERGIZE, AND EMPOWER A DIVERSE, GLOBAL COMMUNITY IN HEALTHCARE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION TO SCALE MEDICINE TO ATTACK AND SOLVE HEALTHCARE PROBLEMS". ONE OF THE MAIN THEMES OF THIS EVENT WAS IN MENTAL HEALTH CARE. AS AN MIT ALUMNUS, DR. DENG WORKED AS A GRAND HACK JUDGE AND PROVIDED FEEDBACK TO THE GROUPS OF YOUNG AND DEVELOPING HEALTHCARE ENTREPRENEURS.IN SEPTEMBER, THE SINGULA TEAM PROVIDED A SEMINAR LUNCHEON EVENT FOR 15 STUDENTS AND A SPEAKER SERIES TALK FOR 40 STUDENTS AT THE UPENN STUDENT GROUP, WHARTON UNDERGRADUATE HEALTHCARE CLUB (WUHC), WHERE WE WILL DISCUSS OUR INNOVATIVE VISION TO TRANSFORM MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSTICS. IN NOVEMBER, WE HOSTED A DISCUSSION EVENT WITH 15 ADULT INDIVIDUALS FROM THE NEW YORK CITY COMMUNITY THAT WAS FOCUSED ON IDENTIFYING SOURCES OF STIGMA ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS. | $0 | $3,486 |
