Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The State House in Annapolis was once bustling with reporters. News bureaus across the state were the springboard for community-based stories. But local and state news coverage began drying up. Large newspapers covering Maryland slashed budgets for local and state news coverage. Few reporters were left to hold elected officials and institutions accountable. Maryland Matters was conceived as a way to fill that gap in coverage with a nonprofit, nonpartisan and independent digital news site. The Maryland Matters team seeks to provide news with original reporting that educates the public about subjects that are useful and essential to their communities.

Maryland Matters is an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan news site dedicated to reporting on critical developments in Maryland, particularly concerning government, public policy and policy makers, to educate the public on subjects useful to residents and beneficial to the community. Maryland Matters provides citizens with the news they need to hold their government and elected officials accountable.

But local and state news coverage began drying up. Large newspapers covering Maryland slashed budgets for local and state news coverage. Few reporters were left to hold elected officials and institutions accountable. Maryland Matters was conceived as a way to fill that gap in coverage with a nonprofit, nonpartisan and independent digital news site. The Maryland Matters team seeks to provide news with original reporting that educates the public about subjects that are useful and essential to their communities.
